SoJimmighthaveseemedtheveritablesymbolforthenewmathcurriculuminstalledoverthelastsevenyearsinthisambitious,educatedsuburbofRochester.Sinceseventhgrade,hehadbeentakingthe"constructivist"or"inquiry"program,sonamedbecauseitemphasizespupils'constructingtheirownknowledgethroughaprocessofreasoning.
Jim,however,placedthecreditelsewhere.Hisparents,anengineerandaneducator,covertlytutoredhimintraditionalmath.Severalteachers,intheprivacyoftheirownclassrooms,contravenedtheofficialcurriculumtoteachtheproblem-solvingformulasthatconstructivistmathdenigratesasmindlessmemorization.
"Mywholeexperienceinmaththelastfewyearshasbeenastruggleagainsttheprogram,"Jimsaidrecently."WhateverI'veachieved,I'veachievedinspiteofit.Kidsdonotdobetterlearningmaththemselves.There'sareasonwegotoschool,whichisthatthere'ssomeonesmarterthanuswithsomethingtoteachus."

ThestrifehastakenonaparticularintensityhereinPenfield,perhaps,becausethetownincludesanunusuallylargeshareofengineersandscientists,becauseoftheproximity(接近)ofcompanieslikeXerox,KodakandBausch&Lomb.Skilledthemselvesinmath,theyhaverefusedtoacceptthepremisethatinnovationmeansimprovement,andintheirownhouseholdstheyhaveseenevidencetothecontrary.
