Elias’lifeThanksgiving

Day

is

a

national

holiday

celebrated

mainlyin

the

US

and

Canada

as

a

day

of

giving

thanks

for

thegood

harvest

and

of

the

past

year.In

1620,

the

settlers

sailed

to

America

on

the

May

Flower,looking

for

a

place

where

they

could

have

freedom

ofreligion.

After

a

stormy

two-month

voyage,

they

landed

at,Massachusetts

in

November.

During

their

first

winter,

overhalf

of

the

settlers

died

of

hunger

or

diseases.Those

who

survived

began

growing

food

in

the

firstspring.

All

summer

long

they

waited

for

the

harvests

withgreat

anxiety,

knowing

that

their

lives

and

the

futureexistence

depended

on

the

coming

harvest.Finally

they

had

a

good

harvest.

And

therefore

it

wasdecided

that

a

day

of

thanksgiving

to

the

Lord

should

befixed.It

was

in

1941

that

President

Franklin

D.

Rooseveltannounced

the

fourth

Thursday

of

November

asThanksgiving

Day

every

year.

The
