LuXunisoneofthegreatestChinesewritersofthe20thcentury.

Besideshisfamousstories,healsowrotemanyinfluentialarticlesabout

thelivingconditionsofChinesepeople.

Bornin1881toawealthyfamily,LuXunhadahappychildhood.In

1893,however,hisgrandfather,aseniorgovernmentofficial,wasputinto

prisonfortakingmoney.Atthesametime,hisfatherbecameseriously

ill.Fromthattimeon,hisfamilywasnolongeracceptedbytheir

relativesandfriends.Theseearlyexperiencesgreatlyinfluencedhis

writing.

BythetimeLuXunarrivedinNanjingtostudyatuniversityin1899,

healreadybelievedthatChinesesocietyhadtochangeandbecomemodern.

In1902hewenttostudyinJapan.Therehebeganwritingarticlesfor

severalChinesestudentmagazines.Heshowedagiftforwritingand

translatingandheevenwroteseveralbooks,althoughnonewaspopular.

HereturnedtoChinain1909becausehewasinneedofmoney.

AfterworkingforseveralyearsasateacherinBeijing,LuXunagain

returnedtowriting.In1918,hewrotehisfamousshortstoryDiaryof

aMadman.ItwasthefirstChinesenovelpublishedusingtheeveryday

languagethatpeoplespoke,whichhelpedmakeitagreatsuccess.This,

togetherwithhisnovelTheTrueStoryofAh0(1921),madeLuXunaleading

Chinesewriter.

Althoughsuccessful,LuXunstillworriedgreatlyaboutChina's

future.In1927,hemovedtoShanghaiandgaveupwritingstoriesinorder

todevotehimselftowhathecalled“penwarfarew.Heonlywrotearticles

whichcalledonthepeopletofightagainstthegovernment.Forthis,the

governmentstoppedhimfrompublishinganymorebooks.Hewasforcedto

writehisarticlesusingfalsenames.

Sincehisdeathin1936,LuXun'simportanceandinfluencehavegrown.
