Analysisofteachingmaterial

What:TheteachingmaterialisapassageabouttheimportanceofsavingelephantsinThailand.Itdescribesthesignificanceofelephantsasaculturalsymbolandtheirintelligenceandabilities,whilealsohighlightingthedangertheyfaceduetohumanactivitiessuchasdeforestationandivorypoaching.

Why:Thepurposeofthepassageistoraiseawarenessamongstudentsabouttheimportanceofprotectingelephantsandtoencouragethemtotakeactionbyavoidingthepurchaseofivoryproductsandpromotingconservationefforts.

How:Theauthorusesdescriptivelanguagetohighlighttheuniquecharacteristicsandabilitiesofelephants,aswellasemotivelanguagetoconveytheurgencyandimportanceoftheissue.

Teachingobjectives

Bytheendofthesession,moststudentswillbeabletounderstandtheGoldilocks'storyandtellsimplestorieswithsimplepasttense.Thiswillbeachievedby:

1.Identifyingthemainideaandkeydetailsofthepassage.

2.DiscussingthesignificanceofelephantsinThaicultureandthethreatstheyface.

3.Analyzingtheauthor'suseofdescriptiveandemotivelanguagetoconveytheimportanceofconservationefforts.

Teachingfocus

Theteachingfocuswillprimarilydealwithreadingcomprehensionandvocabulary.Studentswillbeencouragedtousecontextcluesandotherstrategiestoinferthemeaningofunfamiliarwords.

Anticipateddifficulties

Studentsmaystrugglewithsomeofthemorecomplexconceptspresentedinthepassage,suchas"deforestation"and"poaching".

Studentsmayalsohavedifficultyidentifyingthemainideaofthepassage,especiallyiftheyarenotfamiliarwiththeculturalsignificanceofelephantsinThailand.

Additionally,somestudentsmayhavepreconceptionsorbiasesabouttheissueofconservationthatcouldaffecttheirengagementwiththematerial.

Teachingprocedure

Step1Lead-in

1.Beginthelessonbyaskingstudentsiftheyknowanyfactsaboutelephants,andiftheyhaveeverseenanelephantinpersonorinavideo.

2.Introducethetopicofthelesson,explainingthattheywillbereadingapassageabouttheimportanceofsavingelephantsinThailand.

3.Askstudentswhytheythinkitmightbeimportanttoprotectelephants,andwhattheyknowaboutthethreatsfacingelephantstoday.

Step2Listenandread

1.Havestudentslistentoarecordingofthepassagebeingreadaloud,whilefollowingalongwiththetextonahandoutorontheboard.

2.Encouragestudentstounderlineorhighlightanyunfamiliarvocabularywordsastheyread.

3.Afterthereadingiscomplete,askstudentstosharetheirthoughtsaboutthepassage,andanyquestionstheymayhave.

Step3Groupwork

Dividestudentsintosmallgroupsandassigneachgroupaspecificsectionofthepassagetoanalyzeindepth.

Provideeachgroupwithasetofquestionstoguidetheiranalysis,suchas"Whatisthemainideaofthissection?","Whataresomekeydetailsorexamplesthatsupportthemainidea?",and"Howdoestheauthoruselanguagetoconveythesignificanceofthisinformation?"

Allowtimeforeachgrouptodiscusstheirsectionandprepareasummarytosharewiththewholeclass.

Step4Summary

1.Askeachgrouptosharetheirsummaryoftheirassignedsectionwiththeclass.

2.Encourageotherstudentstoaskquestionsorprovideadditionalinsightsbasedonthesummariesshared.

3.Usethistimetoclarifyanymisconceptionsoraddressanyquestionsthatmayhavearisenduringthegroupwork.

Step5Exercises
