‘Thinkingsmall’withAImeansusingitinanarrow,backward-lookingwayto

performtasksordeliverproductsasinthepast.Thisapproachtrapsusinalimitedvisionofwhatthetechnologycanachieve-ratherlikeifelectricityhadbeenusedonlytoreplacecandleswith‘electriccandles’ratherthanhelptocreatecomputing,telecommunications,satellites,airtravel,andcountlessotherinnovations.

Thinkingsmallcantendtodisplaceworkersbylimitingaspirationstoreshapingexistingpractices–the‘a(chǎn)lreadydone’ratherthanthe‘couldbe.’6

‘Thinkingbig’withAI,ontheotherhand,meansapproachingAIasa

transformativetool,usingittounlocknewcapabilities,products,andeven

industries.AI,ifusedwithimagination,couldsparkafloweringofnewjobsandnewbusinessmodels.Forexample,2/3ofjobsintheUStodaydidnotexistin1940,andmanyofthesenewjobswereenabledbyadvancesintechnology.7

OurdatasuggeststhatcompaniesaresofarthinkingbigwithAI.Ratherthan

usingAIonlytoreduceheadcount,companiesappeartobeusingittohelpmanyworkersineventhemosthighlyautomatablerolestocreatemorevalue.
