collaboration,successstoriesremainrare,asreal-worlddynamicsprovemorechallengingthantheory.

whitepaperaimstohelporganizationsthinkmorestrategicallyaboutworkingwithdiversestakeholders.Whilethereisnosingle“right”

ThetransitiontoHYBRITtechnologyinthevaluechainis

expectedtoreduceSwedensCO2emissionsbymorethan10%andFinlandsby7%;thereisalsosignificantglobal

potential.VolvoGroup,Epiroc,PeabandothersarealreadyusingHYBRITsfossil-freesteelinvehicles,heavymachinery,buildingsandconsumerproducts.

Movingfrompilottocommercialization,thejointventureplansto:

HYBRIT(HydrogenBreakthroughIronmakingTechnology)isatransformativejointventurebetweenthreeleadingSwedishcompanies,sharingtheinvestmentandriskrequiredto

developthetechnologyinthevaluechainrequiredfortheindustrialproductionoffossil-freesteel.6

In2016,SwedishsteelmakerSSABjoinedforceswithLKAB(Europeslargestironoreproducer)andVattenfall(oneof

Europeslargestenergycompanies)todevelopthefirst

fossil-freesteel.HYBRITreplacesthecurrentblastfurnaceprocess,reliantoncoalandcoke,withafossil-freehydrogengas-basedprocesswhichemitswaterinsteadofCO2.7

PromptedbySwedensclimatepolicyframeworktargeting

zeroemissions,HYBRIToriginatedfromSSABsexplorationofhydrogen-basedsteelmakingatscale.FurtherimpetuscamefromFossilFreeSweden,agovernmententitythatcoordinatessectorinitiativesandalignsgovernment/businessefforts.

Tohelpdrivethetransitionofthevaluechain,SSABsought

outLKABandVattenfall,bothstate-ownedcompanies.Theirmarketpowerandinfluencewerecrucial:LKABproduces80%oftheEUsandalmostallofSwedensironore,8whileVattenfallprovidesasignificantportionofSwedenspowercapacity.

In2017,thethreecompaniesformallyestablishedHybrit

DevelopmentAB,atech-developmentcompany,asan

independentjointventurewithequalownershipandbalancedgovernancethroughatripartiteboard.Thisstructurepools

StrategicvaIuechainpartnering.Eachownercontributescomplementarystrengths,skillsandresources,alongwithsignificantscaleinitsrespectivefield,plusawillingnesstosharerisk.
