Cognitivepsychologistsassertthatourbehaviorisinfluencedbyourvalues,bythewaysinwhichweinterpretoursituationsandbychoice.Forexample,peoplewhobelievethataggressionisnecessaryandjustified-asduringwartime-arelikelytoactaggressively,whereaspeoplewhobelievethataparticularwaroractofaggressionisunjust,orwhothinkthataggressionisneverjustified,arelesslikelytobehaveaggressively.

Onecognitivetheorysuggeststhataggravatingandpainfuleventstriggerunpleasantfeelings.Thesefeelings,inturn,canleadtoaggressiveaction,butnotautomatically.Cognitivefactorsintervene.Peopledecidewhethertheywillactaggressivelyornotonthebasisoffactorssuchastheirexperienceswithaggressionandtheirinterpretationofotherpeople’smotives.Supportingevidencecomesfromresearchshowingthataggressivepeopleoftendistortotherpeople’smotives.Forexample,theyassumethatotherpeoplemeanthemharmwhentheydonot.
