AstheSustainabilityDirectoroftheCPHIportfolioofglobalPharmaevents,itgivesmegreatpleasuretopresentthis

Creatingamoresustainablepharmaceuticalindustryisachallengingandongoingprocess,asitisacrossmanyothersectors.ThissustainabilityreportfromCPHIOnlineaimstoseehowfarwe’vecomeinrecentyears,buildingonthetopicscoveredinourreportin2023onthesupplyandvaluechain,andhowdifferentkindsofemissions

areinvolvedateverystage,andtheirimpactontheenvironment.

Thisreportlookstotaketheselessonsonestepfurther.

Nowthatwehaveabettergroundinginsustainability

inthepharmaceuticalworld,wecantakeaction.There

aremanyinitiatives,acrosshealthcareandbeyond,to

encourageandassistplayersintheirrespectivefields

inimprovingthemselvesandtheirbusinessmodelsin

respecttotheenvironmentandthepeopleitaffects.Inthepharmaceuticalindustrythisextendstomanydifferent

Manycompaniesstilldonotreportallemissions

comprehensively,buttheydoreportthemtovaryingdegrees,whichisanimprovementonpreviousyears.

It’shardtodefinitivelystatewhetherregulationsand

legislaturehasimprovedgloballyinaconclusivesense

inregardstolimitingthepharmaceuticalindustry’s

environmentalimpact.However,therehavebeensignificantstepstakenbysomecountriesandgoverningbodies.

NicHunt,theGlobalHeadofSustainabilityatNelipakHealthcarePackagingstated:

“Morefocusonsustainabilitystrategyhasledtoreducedfootprints,morecircular

designs,greaterfocusonresilience,ethics,labourandhumanrights,andincreased

actionstoproveprogressthrough

credentialingandcompliance.Capital

flowsintoadvancedrecyclingandother

innovationiscreatingnewoptionsatscaleandincreasedawarenessoflegislative

changeiscontributingtoalignedcollaboration.”

TheGermanSupplyChainDueDiligenceActisaprime

exampleofrecentlegislativechange,whichcameinto

effectfromJanuary2023,theActobligescompaniesthat

areheadquarteredinGermanytocomplywithacertain

setofmeasurestoensureenvironmentalandhumanrightsstandardsaremet.

Alsointhepastyear,wehaveseengreater

acknowledgementofthehealthcareindustryashaving

alargeimpactonclimatechange,whichalsooffersan

opportunityforimprovement.AtCOP28heldinDubaiin

2023,forthefirsttimeadeclarationonthefieldwassigned

–the

COP28UAEDeclarationonClimateandHealth

by132countries,provingtobeoneofthemostpopular

declarationsfromtheevent[1].

Thedeclarationstatesthat:‘Climatechangeisthegreatestthreattohumanlives,health,livelihoods,andwell-beinginthe21stcenturyandamplifiespeaceandsecurityissues’[1].

Onamoremolecularscale,whenaskedaboutthe

awarenessofcompaniesregardingScope3emissionsandtheirimpactonclimatechange,expertsstatethattheyareseeingmorestepstakenbyindividualcompanies,Nicola

Coles,BioPhorumsaid:

“Yesweareseeinglicenseholdersand

supplierscascadingtargetsandeducationthroughtheirsupplychain.”

“Inouropinion,theindustryhasalreadyrealisedthis.Whatisneedednowis

consistentactionacrossallstagesofthevaluechain.WeatP?ppelmann

Suchcommitmentsastheabovearebecomingmore

andmoreingrainedintothecultureandfutureplanningofcompaniesthroughoutthesupplychain,theresultsofwhichmaystillneedsomeyearstobeseen.

WhenCPHIsurveyedtheattendeesattheCPHIevents,

respondentscommentedonhowcommittedtheythoughttheirowncompaniesweretosustainability.

industryhascome.

ThepharmaceuticalindustrydoesseemtobeactivelyreckoningwiththeneedtoaddressScope3emissions.

SchneiderElectricmanagestheEnergizeprogramme,acollaborationof20companiesthatareworkingtogethertoacceleratedecarbonisationinthepharmaceutical

andhealthcaresupplychainbyprovidingrenewable

electricityeducationandpurchasingsupporttopharmaandhealthcaresuppliers.Wehaveseenthenumberof

companiessponsoringthisprogrammewhichmeansthattheyareactivelyworkingtoengagetheirsupplierstolearnaboutandpurchaserenewableenergycontinuetogrowinthepastyear.MoreEnergizesponsorsare

holdingsupplier-specificeventsaroundrenewable

energyandemissionsreductions,creatingsupplychaindecarbonisationtargetsandplanstomeetthosetargets,andsettingexpectationsforsuppliersaroundrenewableelectricityadoption.

SpeakingtothespecificadvantagesoftheEnergizeprogramme,Proomadded:

Renewableenergyhascometotheforeinthelastyearasakeypartoftheindustry’sactionplantoreducecarbon

emissions,severallargecompanieshavepledgedtomakethemovetorenewableenergy,evenincountrieswherethispresentsseveralchallenges,suchasinChina[3].

Colesalsoconfirmedtheescalatingeffortsofindustryleaders:

centredaroundregulationandreportinginrelationto

environmentalimpact,specificallyabouttheneedfor

furtherregulationthanisalreadyinplace[2].Regulation

aroundgoals,whethercompaniesshouldbefinediflimitsareexceeded,andotherlegislativetacticssuchaslife

cycleassessmentsneedtobemadecompulsoryandimportantly,visibletothepublicaswellasmorevisiblein-industry,toincreasetransparencyofoperationsandaccountability.

Itisessentialstakeholdersatalllevels,especiallyin

seniormanagementtounderstandtheimportance
