Study,whichhasmonitoredmorethan5,000peoplefor40years,alsoprovidestroubling
information:peoplewholosttenpercentoftheirbodyweighthadabout20percent
reductioninriskofheartdisease—butpeoplewhogained10percentraisedtheriskby30
percent.Thesenumbersfurthersuggestthatgoingfrom150to135pounds,andbackto
150again,couldleaveyouwithahigherheart-diseaseriskthanyoustartedwith.
D)Whenyoucutcaloriesandloseweight,yourbodywillprotectitselfbyreducingyour
basalmetabolicrate(BMR).Thisisthemeasureoftheenergyusedforroutinefunctions

inourprogram,hadbeenayo-yodieter,andtheytendedtohavethemostdifficultyin

thatpeoplewholoseweightbydietingonlyandwithoutanexerciseprogramcanlosea
considerableamountofmuscle.Butthen,iftheygainweightback,theymayregainless
muscleandmorefat.Whilethereasonisn'tclear,itmaybeeasierforthebodytoputfat
onthantorebuildlostmuscle.We'reaskingifyo-yodietersmaylosefatfromonepartof
thebodyandregainitelsewhere.Forinstance,accordingtoourpreparatorystudiesin
animals,theycouldmovefattotheabdomen.Andresearchshowsthatabdominalfat
raisestheriskofheartdiseaseanddiabetesmorethanfataroundthehipsandthighsdoes.
