文檔簡(jiǎn)介
Madam Chancellor, vice Chancellor, members of the university cancellers, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, Its a great pleasure for me to be asked to address the congregation on behalf of todays honoring graduates. I am honored to be receiving todays degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with which I had a long relationship. In 1964, I planed to take a trip to Hong Kong where I hoped to meet my parents, my brother and my sister, all four living in Shanghai at the time. But to obtain visas for them from British authorities was a difficult problem. Finally, I appealed for help to Dr. AML, the first vice chancellor of this university, who intervened very actively and the five of us succeeded in meeting in Hong Kong for an emotion felt reunion of two weeks. Well, in Hong Kong, I was asked by Dr. Li to give a public lecture on modern high energy physics in the then new city hall in central. The lecture took place on the afternoon of on 1st, December, 1964. For some reason, the Chinese university of Hong Kong made the announcement about it only one day before, on the 29th. The topic of the lecture was not very appetizing for the general public, yet it drew a huge crowd of several thousands of people, mostly young students, many of whom were to become professors, now teaching in various fields in Hong Kong. The image of thousands of young people in queue winding around the city Hall has been engraved in my mind ever since. For it be spoke to me the yielding of young Chinese students for modern knowledge and modern careers, it also be spoke to me the aspiration of Chinese people to emerge from centuries of backwardness to gain its but under the sun of under the sun among the people of the world. Thirty years have past since that day late in 1964. The world has enormously changed. Perhaps the biggest changes are to be found right here in Hong Kong, whether one focuses on the physical shape of the city, its economy, its social political system, Hong Kong has gone through bigger changes, changes for the better than most parts of the world. Will there again be such revolutionary changes for the better for Hong Kong in the next 30years? No one can tell for sure. But I, for one, am consciously optimistic. First, there will be generation after generation of well -trained young people to maintain the vitality of this dynamic city. Next, the vigorous economic growth of China, now spreading towards the less-developed western areas of the country, guarantees the future prosperity of this Special Administrative Region. Thirdly, 20th century has taught mankind how science and technology can increase human productivity beyond anything dreamt of in previous centuries. with its tremendous human resources, its excellent geographical location and its dynamic ability to face challenge, the SAR is well poised to take the advantage of this expanding horizon that future science and technology will open up for mankind. The next 30 years, as us believe, will be exciting as the last thirty years have been .Let us work for the full realization of the aspirations. Mrs. Mongell, Under Secretary Kittani, distinguished delegates and guests, I would like to thank the Secretary General of the United Nations for inviting me to be part of the United Nations Fourth Conference on women. This is truly a celebration, a celebration of contributions women make in every aspect of life: in the home, on the job, in their communities as mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, learners, workers, citizens and leaders. It is also a coming together, much the way women come together everyday in every country. We come together in fields and in factories, in village markets and supermarkets, in living rooms and board rooms. Whether it is while playing with our children in the park or washing clothes in the river or taking a break in an offices cooler, we come together and talk about our aspirations and concerns. And time and again, our talk turns to our children and families. However different we may be, there is far more that units us than divides us. We share a common future and we are here to find a common ground so that we may help bring new dignity and respect to women and girls all over the world and in so doing, bring new strength and stability to families as well. By gathering in Beijing, we are focusing world attention on issues that matter most in lives of women and their families, access to education, health care, jobs and credits, the chance to enjoy basic legal and human rights and participate fully in the political life of their countries. There are some who question the reason for this conference, let them listen to the voices of women in their homes, neighborhoods and work places. There are some who wonder whether the lives of women and girls matter to economical and political progress around the globe, let them look at women gathered here and at Huairou-the home makers, nurses, teachers, lawyers and policy makers the women who run their businesses. It is conferences like this that compel government and people everywhere to listen, look and face the worlds most pressing problem. We have seen peace prevail in most places for half century, we have avoided another war, but we have not solved older deeply rooted problems that continue to diminish the potential of half of the worlds population. Now, its time to act on behalf of women everywhere. If we take bold steps to better the lives of women, we will be taking bold steps to better the lives of children and families, too. Families rely on wives and mothers for emotional care and support. Families rely on women for labor in the home, and increasingly, families rely on women for income needed to raise healthy children and care for other relatives. As long as discrimination and inequalities remain so common place around the world, as long as women and girls are evaluated less, fed lest, fed last, over- worked, not paid, not schooled, subjected to violence in and out of their homes, the potential of human families to create a peaceful and prosperous world will not be realized. Let this conference be our and the worlds call to action. And let us heed the call so that we can create a world in which every woman is treated with respect and dignity, every boy and girl is loved and cared for equally and every family has the hope of a strong and stable future. Thank you very much. Every day, more than 800 million people worldwide, among them 300 million children suffer the gnawing pain of hunger and the disease
