3、as drugs do.Measures have bee n take n to help people keep away from the harm of smok ing. In many cities, smok ing is forbidde n in public places. The dan ger of smok ing is warned of everywhere. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisementsfor cigarettes.World "No Tobacco Day" i
4、s observed every year as the biggest campaig n aga inst smok ing.2. My First JobBefore I started at uni versity, I took my first job as a waitress in a nice restaura nt. At the ni ght before my first day, I was too excited to go to sleep and as a result, I got up late in the mornin g. I threw on my
5、clothes and rushed over to the restaura nt.In a great hurry, I did n't hear clearly the head waiter's in struct ion that we should go into the kitche n through one door and out from the other. So whe n I took two plates of eggs and bac on and an orange juice out to the restaura nt, I went st
6、raight towards the wrong door and collided with ano ther waiter coming in!Worst of all was that I wore a pair of smart shoes but with high heels! A few hours later I was in agony yet had no time to cha nge them. By the time we fini shed servi ng dinner at about 10:30 I was completely exhausted. Neve
7、rtheless, I lear nt someth ing through my experie nee.3. MoneyMoney is what everybody desires. It can be used to buy food, clothes, books, bicycle, furn iture and many other things people n eed or want.Money is con sidered by many people as the most importa nt thing in life. With money, they can go
8、wherever they please and do whatever they want. With money, they can buy a fine house to live in, fashi on able clothes to put on, and a nice bicycle to ride. And with money, they can employ attendants to serve them. In a word, money can make people comfortable and bring them happ in ess.However, mo
9、ney is also the source of all crimes and brings them misery. Since money is so tempting, quite a few people are attracted by it and begin to go astray.By hook or by crook, they try to make money. To get more money, they gamble, swindie, steal, rob or do many other evil things, for "money makes
10、the mare go". As a result, money leads them to jail or even to the executi on groun ds.Of course money is useful and desirable, yet we should make money in proper way and spe nd our money on proper thin gs.4. My View on Opportu nityDifferent people have different views on opportunity. It is hel
11、d that there are few opport un ities. But it is also held that there are opport un ities everywhere.Those who hold the first opinion think that there are too many people and there is always an intense competitionfor limitedopportunities.In contrast, those whohold the sec ond view think that if one i
12、s not prepared, he can hardly have any opport un ities: however, if one is prepared, he can have a lot of opport un ities.As to me, I agree with the latter. Admittedly, there is really an intense competiti on for limited opport un ities, but it is not to say the one can't create opportunitieshim
13、self. In most cases opportunitiesare created by people themselves.For example, many people lost their jobs in rece nt years. Some people wait for opport un ities in vain. However, others create opport un ities themselves and get self-employed. Even tually they become employers themselves.Therefore,
14、to some exte nt, one can take his desti ny into his own han ds.5. Job-hopp ingDiffere nt people have differe nt views on job-hopp ing. Some people would like to always en gage in one work because they think that if one sticks to one work, he will be quite familiar and skillful with the work. However
15、, others would like to cha nge jobs con sta ntly because they con sider it fashi on able to do so and besides they thi nk they can get differe nt work experie nces.As to me, I am in favor of the former group of people's attitude. I thi nk that if one always works in one field, he can accumulate
16、a lot of experienee in that field which in turn will further improve his work. Therefore he will become an expert in that field. However, if one hops from one job to ano ther, he can n ever amass experie nee in one field. Although he can get differe nt work experie nces, he can't make use of the
17、seexperie nces in oneparticular work. Therefore, he will alwaysbea jack-of-all-trades.Inconclusion,if one wants to be an expert in one field, he should not hop fromone job to ano ther.Passage 6I had an amus ing experie nee last year. After I had left a small village in the south of Fran ce, I drove
18、on to the n ext tow n. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soonas he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same Ian guage. Apart from a few wordsdo not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke duri ng the jour ney. I had n early reached the town,whe n the young man sudde nly said, very slowly, 'Do youspeak En glish?'
