9、 listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.In a small village in Scotland the locals still drink to their "Lord Williams". Some of the people of this beautiful village never quite trusted this rich stranger, who only visited on weekends, right from the beginn

10、ing. Later many suspected he was not really a wealthy Lord after he had spent great sums of money in the village buying up and improving a large number of properties with no hope of ever getting his money back in the future. However all agree that he and "his" money helped the village back

11、 onto its feet. Where his money came from and why he spent it on their village would only be revealed at a later date. Second Listening Listen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences. 1. Why initially did some villagers not trust "Lord Williams"?The

12、 reasons for their distrust of this rich stranger were varied. For one thing, “Lord Williams” did not live in the small village but only visited it on weekends ever since he came to the village for the first time. For another, people of the small village were not quite sure about him. He was so stra

13、nge to the local people that they may even have doubts about his identity. Perhaps the most important reason lies in the fact that people were confused with his real motivation for doing all this. They may be troubled time and again by such questions as “what is his actual purpose”? 2. At a later da

14、te why did many villagers suspect he was not the person he claimed to be?At first, just because the local people did not know much about the rich stranger, they held him in great esteem. But with time passing by, peoples suspicions of the noble man were aroused. The first thing which made them suspi

15、cious of him was whether he was really a wealthy lord, because according to their life experience, few lords would do things like that. The next thing they could not understand was where his money came from. The last, perhaps the most important one, was why he spent such great amount of money on the

16、 small village, but had no hope of ever getting it back in the future. 3. Why do the villagers still drink to their "Lord"?The villagers hold such friendly attitudes towards him just because they all agree that he and “his” money helped the village back onto its feet. Whatever his motive w

17、as, no one can deny the fact that this man invested so much money in the small village that used to be lifeless, and the villagers really benefited a lot from his generous investment. Therefore, the villagers highly appreciate his “great contribution” to the village and intend to extend their thanks

18、 to him.Text AnalysisMain Idea of the TextThe author tells us the true story of Anthony Williams, a man driven by greed to live out a fantasy of becoming a noble man by stealing what was entrusted to his care.Text Structure AnalysisThe story is made up of 4 parts.Part 1: General background of the st

19、ory. This part is made up of 5 paragraphs, from Paragraph 1 to Paragraph 5. It tells us where the story took place and who was the hero of the story. It also tells us roughly about what the hero did and the truth behind what he did. Then it continues to tell us that the hero, Mr. Williams, was broug

20、ht into court for what he had done.Part 2: What are the responses from the villagers to Mr. Williams case? The part from Paragraph 6 to Paragraph 8 tells us that the villagers responses to Mr. Williams varied: some still supported him; some felt hard to understand how a clever person like him could

21、mislead people; still others wondered where the money had come from.Part 3: What are the major crimes that Mr. Williams committed and how did he spend the money? Part 3 is made up of 6 paragraphs, from Paragraph 9 to Paragraph 14. This part reveals that Mr. Williams stole more than £8 million o

22、ver eight years. And he spent the money buying an estate and noble titles, fine stone cottages, a pub and a hotel, and also the most expensive crystal glasses for his restaurant.Part 4: What was the result of Mr. Williams, spending such a large amount of money? Part 4 is from Paragraph 15 to Paragra

23、ph 17. It tells us how Mr. Williams was caught by the bank and what the police did after they found Mr. Williams crime.
