11、Intelligent Vehicle InitiativeIn the wake of the computer and information revolutions, motorvehicles are undergoing the most dramatic changes in their capabilities andhow they interact with drivers since the early years of the century.In 1908, Henry Fords Model T exemplified major breakthroughs inau
12、tomotive design. Not only did its interchangeable parts inaugurate easyand economical mass production, but its user-friendly operation allowedalmost anyone to drive. Nearly 90 years later, the motor vehicle isresembling less and less Fords simple machine and quickly becoming acomplex mobile computer
13、, capable of acting as a navigator, a safeguard,and even, a second driver. These new capabilities will not only change howwe drive; intelligent vehicles could also enhance transportation services,save lives, and bolster the competitiveness of U.S. industries.However, intelligent vehicles arent quite
14、 here. Instead, thecomponents that make vehicles smarter - new information, safety, andautomation technologies - are arriving on the market as piecemealaccessories, offered either as optional equipment by new vehiclemanufacturers or as speciality components by after-market suppliers. Thesetechnologi
15、es are being developed and marketed to increase driver safety,performance, and convenience. These individual technologies, however,have yet to be integrated to create a fully intelligent vehicle that works7 cooperatively with the driver.The automotive industry is already aware of and addressing pote
16、ntialproblems associated with the uncoordinated influx of technology. But theirprogress is hampered by technical and economic obstacles, uncertainconsumer interest, and insufficient standards and guidelines. Also, neitheroriginal vehicle manufacturers or government regulators (unless safetyproblems
17、are clearly proven) have control over after-market products,especially their use in trucks and buses. However, without ahuman-centered design approach for the intelligent vehicle that attemptsto integrate and coordinate various technologies, we may not only lose theopportunity to realize the benefit
18、s offered by new in-vehicle technologies,but we could inadvertently degrade driving safety and performance.Recognizing the importance of smart vehicles and the potential forunintended consequences if human factors are not placed at the center oftheir design, DOT launched the Intelligent Vehicle Init
19、iative (IVI) in 1997.This initiative aims to accelerate the development, availability, and use ofintegrated in-vehicle systems that help drivers of cars, trucks, and busesoperate more safely and effectively.The 1980s television series Knight Rider featured an intelligentvehicle that could leap moder
20、ately tall buildings, drive itself at seeminglysupersonic speeds, spy on bad guys, and had the diction and personality ofan English butler. The car was not only smart, but smart-alecky. Although8 intelligent vehicles in the real world will not be able to fly over standingtraffic, they will have form
21、idable capabilities. As envisioned by IVI, smartvehicles will be able to give route directions, sense objects, warn drivers ofimpending collisions, automatically signal for help in emergencies, keepdrivers alert, and may ultimately be able to take over driving.The use of information- and computer-ba
22、sed technologies in motorvehicles, however, is not new. Widescale computerization of motor vehiclesbegan in the 1980s with technologies designed to enhance vehicleoperation and driver comfort. These technologies included electronic fuelinjection to control engine performance, particularly to reduce
23、vehicularemissions and improve fuel economy, antilock braking systems to helpdrivers retain control on slippery roads, and cruise control to relieve drivertedium during long stretches of driving. Whereas these technologies wereprimarily aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the vehicle, the most re
24、centwave of in-vehicle technology, which is of most interest to IVI, are theintelligent transportation systems designed to enhance the capabilities ofthe driver. These systems include warning and information, driverassistance, and automation technologies.Just as people possess different specialized
25、abilities, in-vehicle ITStechnologies endow vehicles with different types and levels ofintelligence to complement the driver. Driver information systemsexpand the drivers knowledge of routes and locations. Warning systems,9 such as collision-avoidance technologies, enhance the drivers ability tosens
26、e whats going on in the surrounding environment. And driverassistance and automation technologies simulate a drivers thinking andphysical actions to operate a vehicle temporarily during emergencies or forprolonged periods.But while a smart vehicle will extend the drivers capabilities, it willalso po
27、tentially expand the drivers traditional role. In particular, in themidst of new in-vehicle technologies, the human role expands from that ofsensory-motor skill, writes Thomas Sheridan, a professor who heads theHuman-Machine Systems Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT), to th
28、at of planner, programmer, monitor of theautomation, diagnostician ., learner and manager.8Integration: The Key to Human-Centered DesignA key criteria of human-centered design is ensuring that a technologyprovides the intended benefits without engendering unintended adverseconsequences. Driving is a
29、 potentially dangerous activity that requiresattentive and alert drivers. Although technologies in the vehicle canenhance the drivers capabilities and comfort, they can also create potentialdistractions that transform even the best driver into a road hazard. TheNational Public Services Research Inst
30、itute, for example, found thatindividuals with cellular phones in their cars had a 34-percent higherchance of having a collision10 ITS research has already shown the benefits and feasibility of many ofthe technologies that will be contained within intelligent vehicles:Route guidance systems will hel
31、p drivers better navigate unfamiliarstreets or find the quickest route to their destinations. In the TravTek fieldtest in Orlando, sponsored by DOT in 1992 and 1993, tourists drivingvehicles equipped with route guidance systems made 30 percent fewerwrong turns and shortened their travel times by 20
32、percent compared todrivers who used paper maps.Collision-avoidance systems will expand the paradigm of traffic safetyfrom protecting the occupant of the vehicle to preventing accidentsaltogether. According to one study, 60 percent of crashes at intersectionsand about 30 percent of head-on collisions
33、 could be avoided if drivers hadan additional half-second to react. Nearly 75 percent of vehicular crashesare caused by inattentive drivers. NHTSA estimates that three types ofcollision-avoidance systems could prevent 1.1 million accidents in theUnited States each year - 17 percent of all traffic ac
34、cidents. These samesystems would save 17,500 lives (compared to the 10,500 lives saved byseatbelts and airbags) and $26 billion in accident-related costs. Other safetyinnovations that are now in testing include automatic collision notificationsystems, which will immediately signal for help if a vehi
35、cles air bagdeploys, and drowsy-driver warning systems that will keep drivers fromfalling asleep at the wheel.11 In-vehicle automation systems will temporarily take over drivingduring emergencies or allow autopiloting for prolonged durations. In 1996,NHTSA began field testing intelligent cruise-cont
36、rol systems, which willautomatically adjust a vehicles cruising speed to maintain a safe distancefrom vehicles ahead, to evaluate the safety impact of this technology. In amore dramatic step towards hands-off, feet-off driving, the NationalAutomated Highway Systems Consortium (NAHSC), which is apart
37、nership of DOT and nine other public and private organizations,demonstrated automated vehicle prototypes on a 12-kilometer test sectionof I-15 in San Diego this past summer. In the future, automated highwaysystems will allow traffic managers to double or even triple the effectivecapacity of highways
38、 by increasing speeds and shortening distancesbetween vehicles. Automated highways could also potentially improvehighway safety by eliminating accidents caused by human error.Aside from delivering safety and efficiency benefits for the travelingpublic, the federal government expects that indigenous
39、development ofintelligent vehicles could promote Americas economic competitiveness.For intelligent vehicles to reach their maximum potential, they mustbe able to communicate with an intelligent transportation infrastructure andwith other intelligent vehicles. For example, communication with a smarti
40、nfrastructure would allow an intelligent vehicle to learn of incidents andthen proactively suggest alternative routes in real time. Smart vehicles12 could also act as probes that could send information about travel conditionsback to the infrastructure to create a richer base of knowledge about trave
41、lconditions on roads and highways. In addition, fully automated vehicleswill likely rely to some extent on the guidance provided by an intelligentinfrastructure and on communication with other smart vehicles. Forexample, in the recent AHS demonstration in San Diego, automatedvehicles with magnetic s
42、ensors under their bumpers were guided bymagnets implanted at 1.2 meter intervals just below the road surface.Over the next five to 10 years, we should see the first generation withadvances in the capabilities of individual driver information and warningsystems. These systems will become increasingly integrated withinformation coordinated through displays. Drivers will still maintain fullcontrol over their vehicles although collision-warning systems will providelimited automated assistance. In addition, vehicles would
