LyingonthehighesttablelandintheworldbetweentheSichuanBasinandtheQinghai-TibetanPlateau,JiuzhaigouValleycoversaltitudesrangingfrom2,000meters(656,168feet)toabout4,300meters(14,107,612feet).Withitslargenumberoflakegroups,waterfallsandrichvarietyofendangeredplantsandfauna,JiuzhaigouwasawardedthestatusofUNESCOManandBiosphereReservein1997andwasalsorecognizedasaUNESCOWorldHeritageSitein1992.ThereservehasreceivedastringofothertitlesincludingthatofaNationalGeologicalPark,aAAAAClassScenicSpotinChinaandaGreenGlobe21.

WithsomeofthemostbeautifulandinspiringsceneryonearthandsomeofthereservesscenicspotsconsideredholybythelocalTibetanandQiangpeople,itisnowonderanumberofmysteriouslegendssurroundthewonderfullandscapeofJiuzhaigou.Manypeoplearedrawntotheareaforthesereasons,andwiththeparkopenallyearroundtheauthoritieshaveensuredthatthefragileenvironmentissufficientlyprotectedwitharangeofcomprehensivetouristfacilities.

InpreviousyearsithadbeendifficultforvisitorstogettoJiuzhaigouduetoitsisolatedlocation,howeverthisisnolongeraconcernduetotheconstructionoftheJiuzhaigouRingWaywhichlinksthereservewithChengduandtheJiuhuangAirport,andhasmadegainingaccesstotheparkagreatdealeasier.TodaymostvisitorstransferatChengduontolong-distancebusesorflightsgoingtoJiuzhaigou.Therouteontheringwaypassesthroughanumberofattractionsandissurroundedbybeautifulnaturalscenery,providingmanyadistractionforanyonemakingthejourney.TherouteoffersopportunitiestoenjoythegreatDujiangyanIrrigationProject,thebeautifulMt.Siguniangshan(FourMaidensMountain)ScenicAreaandanotheroftheworldsmostnaturallystunninglocations-theHuanglongScenicandHistoricInterestArea.

Historically,JiuzhaigouhasbeenhometosmallpopulationofTibetanandQingpeople,andprovidesagoodopportunitytogettoknowmoreaboutthelocalsuniquelifeandculture.ThehighlightofanytriptotheseareasarespecialperformanceslaidonbytheTibetanandQiangpeoplewhicharealsoapopularformofnightlifeinJiuzhaigou.Moreover,tryingsomeofthetypicallocalfoodsandpickingupanumberofthereasonably-priced,locally-producedgoodsoftheTibetanandQianggroupsaresomethingofamustonyourtrip.
