喬布斯在斯坦福大學(xué)的演講稿英文原稿季楚澤Thankyou.I'mhonoredto6ewithyoutodayforyourcommencementfromoneofthefinestuniversitiesinthewordTruthbetold,InevergraduatedfromcollegeandthisistheclosestI'veevergottentoacollegegraduation.TodayIwanttotellyouthreestoriesfrommy[fe.That'sit.Nobigdea〔Justthreestories.Thefirststoryisaboutconnectingthedots.IdroppedoutofReedCollegeafterthefirstsixmonthsbutthenstayedaroundasadrop-inforanothereighteenmonthsorso6foreIreallyquit.SowhydidIdropout?ItstartedbforeIwa^sborn.Mybiologicalmotherwa^sayoung,unwedgraduatestudent,andshedecidedtoputmeupforadoption.ShefeltverystrongythatIshouldbeadoptedbycollegegraduates,soeverythingwasallsetformetobeadoptedatbirthbyalawyerandhiswfe,exceptthatwhenIpoppedout,theydecidedatthelastminutethattheyreallywantedagirl.Somyparents,whowereonawaitinglist,gotacallinthemiddleofthenightasking,'W^'vegotanunexpectedbabyboy.Doyouwanthim?"Theysaid,"Ofcourse."Mybiologicalmotherfoundoutlaterthatmymotherhadnevergraduatedfromcollegeandthatmyfatherhadnevergraduatedfromhighschool.Sherfusedtosignthefinaladoptionpapers.Sheon^fyrelentedafewmonthslaterwhenmyparentspromisedthatIwoudgotocollege.Thiswasthestartinmy[fe.Andseventeeny^a^i^slater,Ididgotocollege,butInaivelychoseacollegethatwasalmosta^sexpensivea^sStanford,andallofmyworking-c[assparents'savingswerebeingspentonmycollegetuition.Aftersixmonths,Icouldn'tseethevalueinit.IhadnoideawhatIwantedtodowithmy[fe,andnoideaofhowcollegewasgoingtohepmefigureitout,andhereIwas,spendingallthem^on^eymyparentshadsavedtheirentire[fe.SoIdecidedtodropoutandtrustthatitwouldallworkoutOKItwa^sprettyscaryatthetime,butlookingba氐itwasonefthebestdecisionsIevermade.TheminuteIdroppedout,Icouldstoptakingtherequiredclassesthatdidn'tinterestmeandbegindroppinginontheon^esthatlookedfarmoreinteresting.Itwasn'tallromantic.Ididn'thaveadormroom,soIsleptonthefloorinfriends'r^oom^s.IreturnedCokebottlesforthefive-centdepositstobuyfoodwith,andIwoudwakthesevenmilesa^c^osstowneverySundaynighttogetonegoodmealaweekatheHareKrishnatemple.Ilovedit.AndmuchfwhatIstumbledintobyfollowingmycuriosityandintuitionturnedouttobepricelesslateron.Letmegiveyouoneexample.ReedCollegeatthattimeofferedperhapsthebestcalligraphyinstructioninthecountry.Throughoutthecampuseverypostereverylabeloneverydrawerwasbeautifuf^fyhand-calligraphed.BecauseIhaddroppedoutanddidn'thavetotakethenormalclasses,Idecidedtotakeacalligraphyclasstolearnhowtodothis.Ilearnedaboutserfandsans-serftypfaces,aboutvaryingtheamountofspacebetweendfferentlettercombinations,aboutwhatmakesgreattypographygreat.Itwa^sbeautiful,historical,artisticallysubt[einawaythatsciencecan'tcapture,andIfounditfascinating.Nonefthishadevenahopeofanypracticalapplicationinmy[fe.Butteny^a^i^slaterwhenweweredesigningthefirstMacintoshcomputer,itallcameback^tome,andwedesigneditallintotheMac.Itwa^sthefirstcomputerwithbeautfultypography.IfIhadneverdroppedinonthatsinglecourseincollege,theMacwouldhaveneverhadmultip[etypefacesorproportionallyspacedfonts,andsinceWindowsjustcopiedtheM^c,itslikelythatnopersonalcomputerwouldhavethem.IfIhadneverdroppedout,Iwouldhaveneverdroppedinonthatcalligraphyclassandpersonalscomputersmightnothavethewonderfultypographythattheydo.Ofcourseitwa^simpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwhenIwasincollege,butitwasvery,veryclearlookingbackwards10yearslater.Again,youcan'tconnectthedotslookingforwardYoucanon^fyconnectthemlookingbackwards,soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.Youhavetotrustinsomething--yourgut,destiny,[fe,karma,whatever--becausebelievingthatthedotswillconnectdowntheroadwillgiveyoutheconfidencetofollowyou^rheart,evenwhenitleadsyouoffthewell-wornpath,andthatwillmakeallthedifference.Mysecondstoryisaboutloveandloss.Iwaslucky.IfoundwhatIlovedtodoearlyin[fe.WozandIstartedAppleinmyparents'garagewhenIwastwen^ty.Weworkedhardandintenyears,Applehadgrownfromjustthetwoofusinagarageintoa$2billioncompanywithover4,000employees.Wedjustreleasedourfinestcreation,theMacintosh,ayearearlier,andIdjustturnedthirty,andthenIgotfired.Howcanyougetfiredfromacompanyyoustarted?Well,a^sApplegrew,wehiredsomeonewhoIthoughtwasverytalentedtorunthecompanywithme,andforthefirstyearorso,thingswentwell.Butthenourvisionsofthefuturebegantodiverge,andeventuallywehadafallingout.Whenwedid,ourboardfdirectorssidedwithhim,andsoatthirty,Iwa^sout,andverypubliclyout.Whathadbeenthefocusofmyentireadultlifewasgone,anditwasdevastating.Ireallydidn'tknowwhattodoforafewmonths.IfeltthatIhadletthepreviousgenerationofentrepreneursdown,thatIhaddroppedthebatonasitwasbeingpassedtome.ImetwithDavidPackardandBobNoyceandtriedtoapologizeforscrewingupsobadly.IwasaverypublicfailureandIeventhoughtaboutrunningawayfromtheValley.Butsomethingslowlybegantodhwnonme.IstilllovedwhatIdid.TheturnfeventsatApplehadnotchangedthatonebit.I'dbeenrejectedbutIwasstillinlove.AndsoIdecidedtostartover.Ididn'tseeitthen,butitturnedoutthatgettingfiredfromApplewasthebestthingthatcouldhaveeverhappenedtome.Theheavinessfbeingsuccessfulwasrep[acedbythelightnessfbeingabeginneragain,lesssureabouteverything.Itfreedmetoenteronefthemostcreativeperiodsinmy[fe.Duringthenextfivey^a^i^sIstartedacompanynamedNeXTanothercompanynamedPixarandfellinlovewithanamazingwomanwhowouldbecomemywfPixarwentontocreatetheworld'sfirstcomputer-animatedfeaturefilm,"ToyStory,"andisn^owthemostsuccessfulanimationstudiointheworldInaremarkableturnfevents,AppleboughtNeXTandIreturnedtoAppleandthetechnologywedeve[opedatNeXTisattheheartofApple'scurrentrenaissance,andLoreneandIhaveawondefulfamiiytogether.I'mprettysurenonefthiswouldhavehappenedfIhadn'tbeenfiredfromApp[e.Itwasawful-tastingmedicinebutIguessthepatientneededit.Sometimes(feEgoingtohityouintheheadwithabrick.Don'tlosefaith.I'mconvincedthattheon^lythingthatkeptmegoingwa^sthatI[ovedwhatIdid.You'vegottofindwhatyoulove,andthatisa^strueforwor^asitisforyourlovers.Yourworkjsgoingtofillalargepartofyour[fe,andtheon^lywaytobetrulysatisfiedistodowhatyoubelieveisgreatwork,andtheon^lywaytodogreatworkjstolovewhatyoudo.Ifyouhaven'tfoundityet,keeplooking,anddon'tsettle.Aswithallmattersftheheart,you'llknowwhenyoufindit,andEkeanygreatrelationshipitjustgetsbetterandbettera^stheye^rsrollon.Sokeep[ooking.Don'tsettle.Mythirdstoryisaboutdeath.WhenIwas171readaquotethatwentsomethingEke'Ifyouliveeachdaya^sfitwasyour[ast,somedayyou'llmostcertainlyberight."Itmadeanimpressiononme,andsincethen,forthepast33years,Ihavelookedinthemirroreverymorningandaskedmysef,"Iftodaywerethelastdayofmy[fe,wouldIwanttodowhatIamabouttodotodby?"Andwhenevertheanswerhasbeen%o''fortoomanydaysinaT^ow,IknowIneedtochangesomething.RememberingthatIllbedeadsoonisthemostimportantthingI'veeverencounteredtohelpmemakethebigchoicesinlife,becausealmosteverything--allexternalexpectations,allpride,allfearofembarrassmentorfailure--thesethingsjustfallawayinthefaceofdeath,leavingonlywhatistrulyimportant.RememberingthatyouaregoingtodieisthebestwayIknowtoavoidthetrapofthinkingyouhavesomethingtolose.YouarealreadynakedThereisnoreasonnottofollowyourheart.Aboutayearago,Iwasdiagnosedwithcancer.Ihadascanat7:30inthemorninganditclearlyshowedatumoronmypancreas.Ididn'tevenknowwhatapancreaswas.Thedoctorstoldmethiswasalmostcertainlyatypefcancerthatisincurab[e,andthatIshouldexpecttolivenolongerthanthreetosixmonths.Mydoctoradvisedmetogohomeandgetmyaffairsinorder,whichisdoctors'codeforpeparetodie."Itmeanstotryandtellyourkidseverythingyouthoughtyou'dhavethenexttenyearstotellthem,injustafewmonths.Itmeanstomakesurethateverythingisbuttonedupsothatitwillbea^sea^sya^spossibleforyourfamily.Itmeanstosayyourgoodbyes.Ilivedwiththatdiagnosisallday.LaterthateveningIhadabiopsywheretheystu氐anendoscopedownmythroat,throughmystomachintomyintestines,putaneedleintomypancreasandgotafewcellsfromthetumor.Iwa^ssedatedbutmywfe,whowasthere,toldmethatwhentheyviewedthecellsunderamicroscope,thedoctorstartedcrying,becauseitturnedouttobeaveryrareformfpancreaticcancerthatiscurab[ewithsurgery.Ihadthesurgeryandthanfuliy,Iamfinenow.ThiswastheclosestI'vebeentofacingdeath,andIhopeitstheclosestIgetforafewmoredecades.Havinglivedthroughit,Icann^owsaythistoyouwithabitmorecertaintythanwhendeathwasausefulbutpurelyintellectualconcept.Noonewantstodie,evenpeoplewhowanttogotoHeavendon'twanttodietogetthere,andyet,deathisthedestinationweallshare.Noonehaseverescapedit.Andthatisa^sitshouldbe,becausedeathisverylikelythesinglebestinventionoflfe.It's[feschangeagent;itclearsouttheoldtomakewayforthenew.rightnow,thenewisyou^.Butsomeday,nottoolongfromnow,youwillgraduallybecometheoldand6eclearedaway.Sorrytobesodramatic,butitsquitetrue.Yourtimeislimited,sodon'twasteitlivingsomeoneelseE[fe.Don'tbetrappedbydogma,whichislivingwiththeresultsfotherpeople'sthinking.Don'tletthenoisefothers'opinionsdrownoutyou^rowninnervoice,heartandintuition.Theysomehowalreadyknowwhatyoutrulywanttobecome.Everythingelseissecondary.WhenIwa^s
