Porousmaterialsareclassifiedintoseveralkindsbytheirsize.AccordingtoIUPACnotation(seeJ.Rouqueroletal.,Pure&Appl.Chem,66(1994)1739-1758),microporousmaterialshaveporediametersoflessthan2nmandmacroporousmaterialshaveporediametersofgreaterthan50nm;themesoporouscategorythusliesinthemiddle.

Typicalmesoporousmaterialsincludesomekindsofsilicaandaluminathathavesimilarly-sizedfinemesopores.Mesoporousoxidesofniobium,tantalum,titanium,zirconium,ceriumandtinhavealsobeenreported.AccordingtotheIUPACnotation,amesoporousmaterialcanbedisorderedororderedinamesostructure.

Thefirstmesoporousmaterial,withalongrangeorder,wassynthesizedinthelate80s/early90s,byaresearchgroupoftheformerMobilOilCompany(seeKresgeetal.,Nature359(1992)710).Sincethen,researchinthisfieldhassteadilygrown.Notableexamplesofprospectiveapplicationsarecatalysis,sorption,gassensing,optics,andphotovoltaics.
