一：一般過去時由動詞的過去式表示，動詞be有was,were兩個過去式，was用于第一、三人稱單數，were用于其他情況。在構成否定及疑問句時，一般都借助助動詞did,動詞be有其獨特的疑問及否定形式（基本上和一般現在時一致）。

二：這個時態(tài)的三種結構可表示如下：

1：否定式均由didnot+動詞原形構成

I/you/he/she/they/wedidnotwork.

2：疑問式均由did+主語+動詞原形構成

三：在英語當中有一部分動詞的過去式變化形式是不規(guī)則的，這類動詞被稱為不規(guī)則動詞。總數大概不過200多個，但是使用頻率很高。主要分成三類：

1、第一類不規(guī)則動詞的三種形式同形，如：
