duringtheperiodofwinterholidays,ihavereadanovel"vanityfair".maincircumstanceofnovelmaydividetwoclues.acluedepictsthedeceasedpoorpainter'sdaughterbeckyafterleavingpingkedunwomanboardingschool,staystemporarilyatrichfamilymissameliahome,butshetrytoseduceamelia'selderbrothertoentergoodsociety.afterthismatterfailed,beckyestopittcrawley"shomeasfamilyteacher,atthesametimesheplayssomecutemeanssuchasbeingunctuous,andgangingwithtogooduse.butwhenpittmakesaproposaltobeckyafterlosingspouse,shehasalreadymarriedknight'ssonrawdon.anotheracluewritepuregirlameliabeingdeeplyinloveoftheofficergeorgeosborne,surmountsallobstaclesfinallygettingmarriedwithhim.butherhusbandabandonsherveryquicklyrightaway.ameliaisspoonytogeorge,evenifafterherhusbanddied,shestillisunwillingtogetremarriedtoothers.final,beckytellsthefactthatgeorgemadeanappointmentwithselftoelopebeforeone'sdeath,ameliaagreegetmarried.beckybeabandonedbecausepersonalrelationshipisfoundthatbythehusbandafterwards.heroldagegetsasumofinheritancefromanotherloverjosephinhand,charitiesbeginningtobeenthusiasticin.

havetoadmitthisstoryisveryreal.personinsidethevanityfairisunabletoseeclearly,thevanityfairisexternalpersonsamebeunabletoseeclearly.somebodyalllongsformoney,position.onceyouhaveownedonekindamongthem,theotherpersonallpaysspecialregardtoyou.thedobbinusesalifetimelovetohavewaitedtillhislovedone,hededicateshisyouthandtimetothepitifulpeopleinvanityfair.but,thefinalisgood.ithinktheauthorcan"tbeartoletgoodpersonsufferhardships,thekindpeoplehasgothappiness,haseinandgoneoutofinthevanityfair.thoseareavaricious,selfish,foolish,proud,amanofnoscrupleshasgotdueretribution.havelookedatseveraltimewithfinal.,alittlebithappy,alittlebitgrieved.thisisnotonlyanovel,thisisasocietyinminiature.itisnotjustintheunitedkingdomatthattime,itisalsointoday.whoisnotencumberedwiththefameandfortune?theothersarebasedonthis.whilethemateriallifeproblemdoesnotsolve,whomdoesgoafterakindoffabulouspureideal?therefore,thepurposethatthecollegestudentstudieshasbeeajob,workingistohaveaportiontobeabletoletpersonlookupononewithspecialrespectlive.certainly,thisdoesnotalternate,weallareachessmanthatdestinyhitsthetargetpersonally.beconsideringselfsocialstatus,beconsideringhowtogotoraiseselfsocialstatus.peopleisabletogotoadoreotherpeopleonly,talkingthoseprominentpersons,youraboutgoesandnotposing,willthereissomebodygoandposing.

Publishedin1847,WUTHERINGHEIGHTSwasnotwellreceivedbythereadingpublic,manyofwhomcondemneditassordid,vulgar,andunnatural--andauthorEmilyBrontewenttohergravein1848believingthatheronlynovelwasafailure.Itwasnotuntil1850,whenWUTHERINGHEIGHTSreceivedasecondprintingwithanintroductionbyEmily'ssisterCharlotte,thatitattractedawidereadership.Andfromthatpointthereputationofthebookhasneverlookedback.TodayitiswidelyrecognizedasoneofthegreatnovelsofEnglishliterature.

Evenso,WUTHERINGHEIGHTScontinuestodividereaders.Itisnotaprettylovestory;rather,itisswirlingtaleoflargelyunlikeablepeoplecaughtupinobsessivelovethatturnstodarkmadness.Itiscruel,violent,darkandbrooding,andmanypeoplefinditextremelyunpleasant.Andyet--itpossessesagrandeuroflanguageanddesign,asenseoftremendouspityandgreatlossthatsetsitapartfromvirtuallyeveryothernovelwritten.

Thenovelistoldintheformofanextendedflashback.Afteravisittohisstrangelandlord,anewertotheareadesirestoknowthehistoryofthefamily--whichhereceivesfromNellyDeans,aservantwhointroducesustotheEarnshawfamilywhoonceresidedinthehouseknownasWutheringHeights.Itwasonceacheerfulplace,butOldEarnshawadopteda"Gipsy"childwhohenamedHeathcliff.AndCatherine,daughterofthehouse,foundinhimtheperfectpanion:wild,rude,andasproudandcruelasshe.ButalthoughCatherineloveshim,evenrecognizeshimashersoulmate,shecannotlowerherselftomarrysofarbelowhersocialstation.Sheinsteadmarriesanother,andinsodoingsetsinmotionanobsessionthatwilldestroythemall.

WUTHERINGHEIGHTSisabitdifficultto"getinto;"theopeningchaptersaresodarkintheirportraitoftheendresultofthisobsessivelovethattheyaresomewhatoff-putting.Buttheyfeedintotheflowoftheworkinaremarkableway,settingthestageforoneofthemostremarkablestructuresinallofliterature,astorythatcirclesuponitselfinaseriesofrepetitionsasitplaysoutacrosstwogenerations.CatherineandHeathcliffareequallyremarkable,bothviciousandcruel,andyetneverabletoshedtheirimpossiblelovenomatterhowbrutallyonemaywoundtheother.

Asthenovelcoilsfurtherintoalcoholism,seduction,andoneofthemostelaboratelyimaginedplansofrevengeitgathersintoaghostlytone:Heathcliff,driventomadnessbyawomanwhoisnottherebutwhoseemsreflectedineverypartofhisworld--dragginghercorpsefromthegrave,hearinghercallingtohimfromthemoors,escalatinghisbrutalitynotforthesakeofbrutalitybutsothathermemorywillneverfade,sothatshemayneverleavehisminduntildeathitself.Yes,thisismadness,insanity,andthereisnopeacethissideofthegraveorevenbeyond.

Itisastunningnovel,frightening,inexorable,unsettling,filledwithunbridledpassionthatmakesonecringe.Evenifyoudonotlikeit,youshouldreaditatleastonce--andthosewhodolikeitwillreturntoitagainandagain.
