Nobodyknowstheanswerforsure,butmanyatetryingtofindout.Therearemany

theoriestoexplainthismystery.Ithasevenbeensuggestedthespacealiensmayhaveplayedaroleregardingthesegiantstatues.AnothertheoryrelatestothefactthatEasterIslandwasinhabitedbyPolynesianseafarers,whotraveledthousandofmilesintheircanoes,guidedbythestars,thecolorofskyandthesun,theshapesofclouds,andthepresenceofbirdsmakingflightsouttoseaseekingfood.ThePolynesiansfirstarrivedontheislandin499A.D.However,theoceancurrentswhichcarriedthemtherewouldmottakethemback.Theyweretrappedand,havingarrivedthere,couldnotleave.ThePolynesiansprobablecaredthestatuesthemselves,perhapsasreligioussymbols.
Todate,887statueshavebeendiscoveredontheisland.However,onlyafewstatueswerecarriedintendeddestination.Therestwereabandonedalongtheway.
Thestatuesappeartohavebeencarvedoutofthetopedgeofwallsofavolcanoontheisland.Afterastatuewascarved,itmayhavebeenrolledordraggeddowntothebaseofthevolcano.Thenitwasputupright,andropesweretiedaroundit.Usingapulleysystem,thestatuewasmovestoitsintendeddestination.
Atitspeak,thepopulationofEaterIslandisbelievedtohavereached11,000.Eventually,theresourcesoftheislandwereexhausted,andthepeopleresortedtocannibalism,eatingoneanother.Workonthestatuesstoppedandthestatueswereknockedover.WhenthefirstEuropeansfinallyarrivedontheisland,mostofthepeopleladdiedout.
