Titanic’ssinking,LillianGertrudAsplund,diedatherhomeinMassachusetts,UnitedStates.Asplund,whowasjustfiveyearsoldatthetime,lostherfatherandthreebrothersinthetragedy.

Oneofthemostfamousstoriesisoftheband.On15April,theTitanic’seight-memberband,ledbyWallaceHartley,hadtriedtokeeppassengerscalmandupbeat.Thebandcontinuedplayingmusicevenwhenitbecameclearthattheshipwasgoingtosink.Noneofthebandmemberssurvivedthesinking.Hartleywasconsideredahero,andhisfuneralinEnglandwasattendedbythousands.

Recently,ateamofresearchersfoundanapparentexplanationintheheavens.TheydiscoveredthatEarthhadcomeunusuallyclosetotheSunandMoonthatwinter,enhancingtheirgravitationalpullsontheoceanandproducingrecordtides.Therare

orbitstookplacebetweenDecember1911andFebruary1912—abouttwomonthsbeforethedisastercameabout.TheresearcherssuggestthatthehightidesrefloatedmassesoficebergstraditionallystuckalongthecoastlinesofLabradorandNewfoundlandandsentthemadriftintotheNorthAtlanticshippinglanes.

Andasecond,putforwardbyaTitanichistorianfromBritain,contendsthattheicywaterscreatedidealconditionsforanunusualtypeofmirage(海市蜃樓)thathidicebergsfromlookoutswhosedutywastowatchcarefullyfordangeraheadandconfusedanearbyshipastotheliner’sidentity,delayingrescueeffortsforhours.MostpeopleknowmiragesasnaturalphenomenacausedwhenhotairneartheEarth’ssurfacebendslightraysupward.Inadesert,theeffectpromptslosttravelerstomistakepatchesofblueskyforpoolsofwater.Butanotherkindofmirageoccurswhencoldairbendslightraysdownward.Inthatcase,observerscanseeobjectsandsettingsfaroverthehorizon.Theimagesoftenundergoquickdistortions—notunlikethewavyreflectionsinafunhousemirror.
