Beyondtheanecdotes,expertspointtoastreamofdata--muchofitfromstudentsthemselves--thatindicatescheatingisrampant.AreportlastJunebyRutgersUniversityprofessorDonaldMcCabeforTheCenterforAcademicIntegrityshowed70percentofstudentsat60collegesadmittingtosomecheatingwithinthepreviousyear;oneinfouradmittedtoengaginginseriouscheating(copyingfromanotherstudent,usingconcealednotes,orhelpingsomeoneelsecheat).McCabe'shighschoolfindingsweresimilarlygrim:Of18,000highschoolstudentssurveyedacrossthecountryoverthepastfouryears,70percentofthoseinpublicschoolsadmittedtoatleastonecaseofserioustestcheating;aboutsixintenadmittedtosomeform.ofplagiarism.Justunderhalfofallprivateschoolstudentsacknowledgedsimilarlapses.
