Theresearchers,ledbyDrMaigengZhou,oftheChineseCentreforDiseaseControlandPrevention,suggestedthiswasbecauseChinaisaffectedbylargeamountsofnaturaldustblownbythewindfromaridareas,whilemostpollutionintheWestcomesfromindustry.

Theyfoundthatforeveryincreaseof10microgramsofairpollutioninacubicmeterofair,themortalityrateincreasedby0.22percent,discountingdeathsfromaccidents. ProfessorFrankKelly,anexpertinenvironmentalhealthatKing’sCollegeLondon,whowasnotinvolvedinthestudybuthasstudiedairpollutioninChina,toldTheIndependent:“ThoserisksareconsiderablylessthanthoseseeninEuropeandtheUS.Formortality(死亡率)inEuropeweareworkingonasixpercentincreaseper10micrograms.”ThatsuggestsairpollutioninEuropeisabout27timesmoretoxicthanaverageairpollutioninChina.

However,ProfessorKellysaidcitieslikeBeijing,ShanghaiandHongKongwerelikelytosufferfromWestern-styleairpollution."Thenaturaldustcomponentthereisnotofthemagnitudethatitwoulddwarfthecoal,biomassandfossilfuelsignals,”hesaid,“Thatmaybetrueincertaincitieswhosepollutionisnotdominatedbylocalpowergenerationormajortrafficcongestion.”

AreebaHamid,anairpollutioncampaignerwithenvironmentalgroupGreenpeace,said:“Poisonousaircausesdamagetopeople’shealthwhereverintheworldtheylive.Wenowknowfumesfromdiesel(柴油機(jī))vehiclesarealotmorepoisonousthancarcompaniesclaimedandthisisabigcauseofairpollutioninEuropeandNorthAmerica.Thesecompanieshavealottoanswerfor,butsofarthey’vemanagedtoavoidanyrealaccountability.”

ThestudyofcitiesinChinafoundtheaverageannualexposetoPM2.5was56microgramspercubicmeter,comparedtotheWHOguidelinelimitforsafeairqualityof10micrograms.
