1.introduction

inchina,literaturehasplayedaveryimportantroleinpeople'slives.asforchildren,itstwomainfunctionsaretostimulatechildren'simaginationandtoexpandtheirlinguisticawarenessonwords;whileinmiddleschool,literaturefunctionsmainlyasatoolformoraltraining.atatertiarylevel,forenglishcourse,mostteachersareusedtotreatingliteraturecourseassomethingsupplementaryforenglishteaching.suchanegativeperceptionshouldbechallenged:howtovalueenglishliteratureandhowtotakeadvantageofenglishliteraturetopromotelanguageteachingshouldbecomethemainconcernofallthediscussiononenglishteachinginanefl(englishasaforeignlanguage)contextlikechina.

2.literatureandlanguage

vincentandcarter(1986:209)havediscussedthatenglishliteratureis"widelyconsideredthegreatestachievementofenglish-speakingpeople".literatureislanguageinuseandcanthereforebeexploitedforlanguage-learningpurposes.literarytextsoftencontainanumberofdifferentvarietiesofenglish.complexthemesandfresh,unexpectedusesoflanguageinliteraryworkscanoftenbroadenstudents'experiencesbothinlifeandlanguagelearning.byaskingstudentstoexploresuchsophisticatedusesoflanguage,wearealsoencouragingthemtothinkaboutthenormsoflanguageuse,"involvingthemintheprocessofdiscoveringmoregeneralisablefeaturesoflanguage"(lazar,1993:19).

3.acombinationoflanguage-basedapproachandreader-responseapproach

alanguage-basedapproachessentiallypromotesthestudyofthelanguageoftheliterarytext.thefocusison"howtouseliteratureforlanguagepractice"(lazar,1993:27)andseekingto"integratedlanguageandliteraturestudy"(carter,1996:2).inthisapproach,studentsaretryingtousetheirknowledgeofenglishtodeveloparesponsetoliteraturethroughexaminingthelinguisticevidenceinthetext,andgraduallyimprovetheirknowledgeofthelanguage.

robertsondavies,arenownedcanadianwriter,haseversaid,"whateversubconsciousintentorconsciousmeaningthathadenteredtheworkashe(thewriter)wroteitnolongerexistedwhenthebookreachedthehandofreaders"(strawandbogdan,1993:39).consideringthisidea,thefocusofteachingliteraturetonon-nativespeakersshouldbeseekingtodevelopreader'sresponse.reader-responseapproachhasbeenpopularlyusedineflliteratureteachinginthepastdecade.accordingtothepenguindictionaryofcriticaltheory,thecentraltenetsofreader-responsetheoryarethatmeaningisnotsomethingthatiscontainedwithinatext,meaningisproducedbyreaders.inthisapproachmoreattentionispaidtostudentsandstudents'thinkingabilitydevelopmentisoneofthemainconcernsofteacher's.論文聯(lián)盟

4.activatestudents'motivationforabetterreading

chinesestudentsareusedtolisteningtoothersandthinkingbythemselves.readabilityisanimportantfactorneedtobeconsideredwhenchoosingteachingmaterialsinachineseeflcontext.pre-activityprovidesstudentstopicstospeakinthein-class-groupdiscussion;thegroupdiscussionactivityoffersstudentsmoreopportunitiestoshapetheirownideas.thuspre-activitycanbeservedasthefirststepinalanguage-basedreader-responselesson.whatismoreimportantisthat,inclassroom,itmustbepermissibleforstudentsto"disliketextsthatotherpeoplelikeandbeboredbytextsthatotherpeoplefindexciting"(thomson,1993:133).usingthetextbooks,teachersarenotmeanttotellstudentswhatauthorityis,buttocreatetheconditionsforsuccessfullearning.takenthesethreefactorsinconsideration,usingliteraturetextcanabsolutelyactivatechinesestudents'motivationinlanguagelearningandhelpthemreallybenefitfromthisgreatachievementoflanguageuse.

5.conclusion

acombinationoflanguage-basedapproachandreader-responseapproachurgesstudentstopayanin-depthstudyontextandmakethemwhole-heartedlyabsorbinthecourse.wecangivethestudentsconfidencetoworkwiththesematerialswhilstatthesametimedevelopingtheirlinguisticcompetenceinthetargetlanguage(mcrae,1996).thisintegratedapproachisstillagreatchallengefortheteacher-dominatedchineseeducation.thebiggest
