dojustthat,showinghowtheinfrastructurewehavetodaycanevolvefromonebasedonthesupplyoffossilfuelsto

oneprovidingthebackboneofacleanhydrogensystem.infrastructuredevelopment.Yet

againstsuchchallenge,thereisopportunity.Acleanenergysystemwithenergysecurityanda?ordabilityatitsheartwillbene?tcompanies,communitiesandconsumersalike.WiththerightcommitmenttoThisdecadeiscritical;we

mustmovefromtalkingaboutchangeto

deliveringit.TheambitiousgovernmenthydrogentargetsacrosstheUKwillonlybemetwithclarity,focusandpartnership.Thegasnetworksare

readyto

playtheirpartintheUK’senergyfuture.Theyhaveaplan,knowwhatisneededto

deliveritandaretakingthenecessarystepsto

dojustthat.Thistransitionto

cleanenergywillrequiresigni?cantchange.Someofthesechanges,

change,andtherightpolicyandregulatorylikebuildingnewo?shorewindfarms,maygounnoticedbyconsumers.Otherchangeswillrequireusto

adjustourbehaviour;for

example,shiftingto

electricvehicles,replacingindustrialfossilfuelequipmentandexchangingthenaturalgasframeworkinplace,we

canusethistransformationto

delivereconomicgrowth,jobsandacleaner,greenerworldthatwillbegoodfor

theUKtodayandforthegenerationsthatfollowtomorrow.boilersthatheatourhomesandbusinesses

Itwillneednewinfrastructure.We

willtodayfor

lowcarbonalternatives.Thescaleandpaceofthischangewilleclipseanythingseeninthesectorbefore.needto

repurposetoday’spipesto

willalsoneednewfacilitiesto

playingaleadingroleindeliveringthis.GBnetworkoperatorsstandreadyto

invest£6.8bn2bytheendofthedecadeinhydrogen-focusedprojects,whilstdeliveringtechnologiesto

decarboniseourenergysystem.Hydrogencouldplayacriticalpartofthisstory,

projectedto

providebetween20-35%ofourenergydemandby2050,1deliveringourclimateandsecuritygoalsinawaythatensurestheenergyweneedisa?ordable.Thismeansaneedforrenewables,nuclear,biofuelsandenergye?ciency,

aswellasotheremergingtechnologiessuchascarboncaptureandonthecoreroleofsafelyandreliablystorageandbatteries.Butwithouthydrogen

movingenergyaroundthecountryfrominthemix,therecanbenoNetZero.whereitisproducedto

all

of

them,it’s

clear

we

will

needa

lot

of

clean

hydrogen.”industrialprocessesandourfood

heatinghomes,businessesandpublicsectorbuildingslike

schoolsandhospitals.Politiciansandthepublicare

unitedintheambitionto

willneed,itisclearthathydrogenisanessentialpartofthefuturelowcarbonenergysystemin2

ful?llheavy-dutytransportneeds,suchasshipsandplanes.Itwillalsobeneededto

fuelsomelorries,coachesandlongerbusroutes,aswellasemergencyandconstructionvehicles,andagriculturalmachinery.sourcesofback-uppowerandenergystoragewillcomplementtheseassetstoensurethelightsstayonwhenthesunisn’tshiningorthewindisn’tblowing.Hydrogenwillbeoneofthesecleanback-upsources.Domestic

heatTechnologies

likeheatpumpsandIndustryManyindustries,includingthosethatmakethechemicals,steelandhouseholdgoodswe

allrelyon,willneedthehightemperatureprocessheatthatlowcarbonhydrogenwillsupply.

ThiswillbecriticaltodecarbonisingtheseindustriesandkeepingjobsintheUK.heatnetworkshaveamajorroleindecarbonisingourheatandhotwater,howeverhydrogenislikelyto

bethebestsolutionfor

someconsumers,dependingonwheretheylive,thecharacteristicsoftheirhomeandhowtheyuseheat.07ENAA

readyingtheexistingnetworksto

deliverNetZero

inthemostcost-e?ectiveandleastdisruptivewaypossible-ablueprintthroughwhichourgasnetworkscanmeetthechallengesandopportunitiesofclimatechange.Hydrogencano?er

alowertotalcostofdecarbonisation,providechoiceandkeepUKbusinessescompetitive.ENAworkhasalreadydemonstratedabalanceddecarbonisationsolutionthatincludesasigni?cantrolefor

hydrogentransformation,alongsidebiogasesandelectri?cation.Thereisgoodevidencetosuggestthatthisbalancedapproachisthemostcost-e?ectivewayto

decarbonise,producinganestimatedsavingofaround£13bnayearby2050inGBalone.3JANE

RECOMMENDATIONSA2050energysystemwithhydrogenwillmakeuseoftheUK-wideundergroundpipenetworkbuiltandpaidfor

byconsumersoverdecades-reducingtheneedfor

new,

abovegroundinfrastructurewhichcouldbedisruptivefor

thecommunitiesthatwouldlivearoundit.ThousandsofbusinessesandindustrialsitesacrosstheUKare

lookingfor

alowcarbongasto

meettheircarbonreductionrequirementsandremaineconomicallycompetitive.Manycompaniesare

alreadyworkingwithgasnetworkstodaytointroducehydrogenintotheirmanufacturingprocesses.Otherlowcarbongasessuchasbiomethanewillalsoplayimportantrolesalongsidehydrogen.We

UK’s

gas

network

consists

of

overFor

the

time,

Britain’s

gas

networks

have

come280,000

km

of

pipes;

enough

to

travel

around

together,

alongside

Mutual

Energy

from

Northern

Ireland,the

world

seven

times.

Around

75%

of

thegas

distribution

pipelines

havebeento

show

the

opportunity

to

develop

a

UK-wide

hydrogeneconomy

between

2030

and

2050.replaced

under

the

Iron

Mains

Risk

ReductionProgramme

a

scheme

which

will

see

a

totalinvestment

of

£28bn.8As

a

result,

the

gasnetworks

already

stand

in

a

strong

positionto

transition

to

new,

low

carbon

gases.We

havedevelopedaseriesofmaps,outlinedinsubsequentpagesofthisreport,depictingaplausiblevisionfor

therolloutofhydrogenandtheinfrastructureto

supportit.In5-yearincrements,themapsshowwhatagradualshiftto

ahydrogen-basednetworkcouldlooklike.

Theyshowwherepipesare

beingrepurposedtokeeptransitioncostsdownfor

consumers,supportedbystrategicnewbuildinfrastructure.Newpolicyannouncementsare

acceleratingthedevelopmentofthehydrogeneconomyinorderto

increasesystemresilience,andpreparefor

rapidscaleupinthe2030sinlinewiththeHydrogenStrategyandSixthCarbonBudget.Thesemapsare

rooted

inrobustmodelling,completedin2021,whichwe’vecollaboratedwiththeUKGovernmentto

develop.ThisisknownastheCommonFutureEndStates(or“CFES”)modelling.Thescenariore?ectedinthesemapsisthe“H5”scenariofromthismodelling,whichisanambitiousyetrealisticscenariofor

therolehydrogencouldplayintheenergysystemofthefuture.We

havecollaboratedwithMutualEnergyinNorthernIrelandto

supplementthismodellingwithplausibleestimatesfor

therolloutofhydrogeninNorthernIrelandaswell.10Governmenttargetsfor

o?shorewindwillseeahugeincreasein?xed

and?oatingo?shorewindaroundourcoasts.Therewillbetimeswhentheelectricitygeneratedfromourwindresourcesoutstripsdemand.Winddevelopersunderstandthatgreenhydrogenproductionisanopportunityto

avoidcurtailment,whichcostUKconsumersover£500min2022fromonshorewindfarmsalone.ThisiswhySGNisconductingastudyto

assessthepotentialvolumeofgreenhydrogenproductioninScotlandfromexistingcurtailedrenewableenergydevelopmentsandfromplannedassets.Themapsare

basedon:l354TWh

ofhydrogeninthe2050energysystem,whichisapproximatelyhalfofcurrentUKnaturalgasdemandfor

heatingandisbroadlyalignedwithprojecteddemandintheClimateChangeCommittee’s“Headwinds”andNationalGrid’s“SystemTransformation”

scenarios.Similarly,developersofnewnuclear–atgigawattandsmallmodularscale–are

exploringhowto

integratehydrogenintotheirsites,whereheatfromnuclearplantso?ers

highe?ciencyproduction.AsMissionZero

stated:“nuclearstationsalsoproduceverylargevolumesoflowcost,lowcarbonheat.HistoricallythisheathasnotbeenutilisedintheUK.ButintheNetZero

context,therearearangeoffutureopportunitiesto

takeadvantageofit,throughforexampleimprovingthee?ciencyofhydrogenproduction”.9Asaresult,theGovernment’scommitmentto

scaleuptheUK’snuclear?eetprovidesadditionalopportunityfor

hydrogenproduction.l17mhomessuppliedbyhydrogenand14mbyelectricalternativesin2

050(these?guresalsore?ecthousingstockgrowthinthisperiod).l50TWh

ofhydrogenstoragedeliveredby2050,whichisroughly?vetimesthecurrentnaturalgasstoragecapacityintheUK.Dueto

theextensivecapacityoftheUK’sgasnetworks,greaterlevelsofinvestmentintonewrenewableprojectscouldbeunlockedifproducershaveaccessto

pipelinesto

carrytheirhydrogento

aconsumer.Asaresult,networksare

commonlyseenasenablingpartnersinnewenergyandindustrialdecarbonisationprojectsacrosstheUK.8.

havealsoindicatedwherewe

expectto

seelikelysitesfor

hydrogenproduction,carboncaptureandstoragefacilities,hydrogenstorageandhydrogenusedinanumberoftransportapplications(aviation,ruraltrainsandhydrogenrefuelingstations).Longterm,theremaywellalsobesigni?canteconomicopportunityfromhydrogenexport,whichwe

haveindicatedonthemaps.Networksare

engagingnowwithelectrolyticandCCUS-enabledhydrogenproductiondevelopersto

assesstheirneedsandensuretheyarereadyto
