Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayinanewschool,soitsunderstandableifyourealittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow--(applause)--withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucouldvestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.

Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.Butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:30inthemorning.

Now,asyoumightimagine,Iwasnttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Andalotoftimes,Idfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.ButwheneverIdcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshedsay,Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster.(Laughter.)

Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.
