Myoglobincontainsasinglepolypeptidechainof153aminoacidresiduesofknownsequenceandasingleironprotoporphyrin,orheme,group.Thesamehemegroupisfoundinhemoglobin,theoxygen-bindingproteinoferythrocytes,andisresponsibleforthedeepred-browncolorofbothmyoglobinandhemoglobin.Myoglobinisparticularlyabundantinthemusclesofdivingmammalssuchasthewhale,seal,andporpoise,whosemusclesaresorichinthisproteinthattheyarebrown.Storageanddistributionofoxygenbymusclemyoglobinpermittheseanimalstoremainsubmergedforlongperiodsoftime.Thefirstbreakthroughinunderstandingthethree-dimensionalstructureofaglobularproteincamefromx-raydiffractionstudiesofmyoglobincarriedoutbyJohnKendrewandhiscolleaguesinthe1950s.Myoglobinisarelativelysmall(Mr16,700),oxygen-bindingproteinofmusclecells.Itfunctionsbothtostoreoxygenandtofacilitateoxygendiffusioninrapidlycontractingmuscletissue.七、球狀蛋白質與三級結構1962年諾貝爾化學獎
