riblesmell!Theirdietismostlydeadanimals.Fortunately,despitetheirname,theyaregenerallynotviolenttowardspeople.Australiaalsohassomeanimalsthatmanypeoplehaveneverheardof,forexample,theduck-billedplatypus.Isthatsomekindofbird?Notatall.Whileitmaylayeggsinanestlikeabird,it’sreallyaprimitivemammal,withauniquebiology.Itseggshatchafterabouttendays,andthenthebabyplatypusnursesfromitsmotherlikeallothermammals.Itsnoselookslikeaduck’sbill,andithasfeetlikeaduck’ssoitcandiveunderthewater,butit’scoveredinhair.Doyouknowwhat’sreallystrangeaboutaplatypus?Theplatypusdoesn’tuseitssensesofsightorsmelltofindfood.Ithasacapacitytofindfoodinthewaterbyusingelectricalsensorsinitsbill.Thereareonlyasmallhandfulofanimalsintheworldthatcandothat!UNIT3SeaExplorationReadingandThinkingREACHINGOUTACROSSTHESEATradeandcuriosityhaveoftenformedthefoundationofmankind’sgreatestachievements.Tocompletethegreatmapoftheworldwasastrongpassionforthepeopleofearlycivilisations.MarcoPolo’stalesinspiredEuropeanexplorerstosearchforsearoutesfromwesttoeast.However,merchantsandexplorersfromtheEastsetsailfromeasttowestmanyyearsbeforeColumbusfirstdid.Inancienttimes,silkfromChinafounditswayoverlandtoIndia,theMiddleEast,andRome,alongwhatbecameknownastheSilkRoad.AtradingrouteacrosstheseawasalsoextendedalongthecoastsoftheIndianOcean,centeredaroundCeylon(nowSriLanka).Here,merchantsfromChinaandmanyotherplacesmettonegotiatetradedeals,whichalsoledtomoreawarenessofeachother’scultures.Overthecenturies,furthertradingallowedmoreexplorationoftheregionstothewestofChina,asrecordedinDuHuan’sRecordofMyTravelsintheeighthcentury.Later,theMingDynastyfurtherdevelopedrelationswiththeseregions.Between1405and1433,sevenlargefleetssailedwestonvoyagesoftradeandexploration.Thesefleetswereasighttobeholdandwereinaleagueoftheirownatthattime.UnderthecommandofZhengHe,theysetsailfromtheSouthChinaSeaacrosstheIndianOceantothemouthoftheRedSea,andthentotheeastcoastofAfrica.Africanroyalfamiliessentgiftssuchasgiraffesasgesturesoffriendshipinreturnforgold,silk,andspices.AlthoughChinawithdrewfromfurtherexpeditionsafter1433,theselandandsearoutesremainedactivechannelsbetweenotherculturesforcenturies.Toreachoutacrossthesearemainsastrongdesiretoday.TheancientsearoutestravelledbyZhengHearebeingrevisitedwiththe21stCenturyMaritimeSilkRoad,whichispartoftheBeltandRoadInitiative.TheaimofthisinitiativeistoencouragecooperationandtradeacrossthehistoricSilkRoadareas,andstrengthenthebondsbetweenChinaandtherestoftheworld.Tradinghasgrowngreatlyinrecentyears,andwillcontinuetodosoinyearstocome.Chinahasinvestedbillionsinsystemsandservicesalongtheseroutes,whichwillhelptogreatlydevelopthewholeareaforthebenefitoffuturetradeandculturalexchange.Chinahasalsojoineditsfriendsacrosstheseaonotherimportantprojects.AlthoughtheancientsearoutesofZhengHehavebeentravelledmanytimes,therearestillmanyotherplaceslefttoexplore.Inrecentyears,ChinahasjoinedothernationsonseveralexpeditionstoexploretheArctic.Fromascientificpointofview,thereisanurgentneedtostudytheArcticinordertounderstandclimatechangeanditseffects.Hundredsofyearson,andwiththelatesttechnologyinhand,theneedtotradeandthedesiretoenhancerelationshipswilldriveChinatoreachoutacrosstheseafarintothefuture.UNIT3UsingLanguagetext1:Whenpeopletalkofexploringtheseamore,theyusuallymeanexploitingit.Seaexplorationhascausedmanyproblemsandwillcontinuetocausemore.Moreexplorationmeansmorepollution.TheDeepwaterHorizonspilledover200milliongallonsofoilintotheseain2010.Plasticpollutionisalsobad,killingmanybirdsandfish,andhasevenbeenfoundinourtapwater.Miningforresourcesisverydamaging,especiallyintheArctic.Becauseofclimatechange,thereislessicenow,whichmeanswecanlookformorefossilfuelsfurthernorth.Butifweburnthese,theicewillmeltmoreandthisnegativecyclewillcontinue.Climatechangeiswarningusthatsomethingisverywrong.Overfishingisanotherproblem.Whalesanddolphinsarealsohuntedfortheirmeatorforso-calledresearch.Althoughthiswasbannedin1982,somecountriesarestill“murdering”theseintelligentcreatureswithoutmercy.Theseaishometolife,nothumanbeings’possessions.Itishuge,butitismoresensitivethanwethink.Ifwedonotprotectit,futuregenerationswillnotforgiveus.Text2Totrulyunderstandourplanet,wemustexploretheoceanswhichcovermostofit.Opponentsmaybeconcerned,butseaexplorationisimportantforourfuture.Forexample,scientificresearchshipscanhelpaddressimportantissuessuchasclimatechange.Weneedtounderstandwhatishappeningtoourplanetsothatwecantakeaction.Therefore,moreresearchisnecessary.Understandingmoreabouttheseawillalsohelpusmanageitsresourcesbetter.Loggingnewspecieswillimproveourunderstandingoflifeontheearth.Itmayhelpusdiscovernewmedicines,aswellasnewsourcesoffoodandenergy.Accessingthedeepoceanmayalsohelpustopredicteventssuchasearthquakes.Thepopulationoftheworldisgrowingandweneednewresourcesforfuturedevelopment.Thereareprobablyvastamountsofresourcesundertheseaandice,notjustoilandgasbutalsovaluableminerals.Ofcourse,therearestillenvironmentalrisks.However,theseshouldbebalancedwitheconomicneeds.Hopefully,astechnologyimproves,wemayhavemoreoptionsf
