andunproductive.Ofcourse,somepeoplearehappytoretire;butleavingone'sjob,
whateveritis,isadifficultchange,evenforthosewholookforwardtoretiring.Many

retireesdonotknowhowtousetheirtimeortheyfeellostwithouttheir
jobs.Retirementscanalsobringfinancialproblems.ManypeoplerelyonSocial
Securitycheckseverymonlh.Duringtheirworkingyears,employeescontributea
certainpercentageoftheirsalariestothegovernment.Eachemployeralsogivesa
certainpercentagetothegovernment.Whenpeopleretire,theyreceivethismoneyas
income.Thesechecksdonotprovideenoughmoneytoliveon,however,because
pricesareincreasingveiyrapidly.Seniorcitizens,thoseoversixty-five,havetohave
savingsinthebankorotherretirementplanstomakeendsmcct.Thcrateof
inflation(通貨膨脹)isforcingpriceshighereachyear;SocialSecuritychecksalone
cannotcoverthesegrowingexpenses.Thegovernmentofferssomeassistance(補助),
Medicare(healthcare)andwelfare(generalassistance),butmanyseniorcitizenshave
tochangetheirlifestylesafterretirement.Theyhavetospendcarefullytobesurethat
(heycanaffordtobuyfood,fuelandothernecessities.
Ofcourse,manyseniorcitizensarehappywithretirement.Theyhavetimeto
spendwiththeirfamiliesorenjoytheirhobbies.Somecontinuetoworkparttime,
othersdovoluntarywork.Some,likethoseintheRetiredBusinessExecutives
Association,evenhelpyoungpeopletogetstartedinnewbusiness.Manyretired
citizensalsobelongtouGoldenAge”groups.Theseorganizationsplantripsand
socialevents.Therearemanychancesforretirees.
Americansocietyisonlybeginningtobeconcernedaboutthespecialphysical
andemotionalneedsofitsseniorcitizens.Thegovernmentistakingsteps
