differentinformation-seekingbehaviors一specifically,diverse(exploringnewtopics)orspecific(deepening
knowledgeonfamiliartopics)一astheyage.
Thestudyinvolved498participantsaged12to79,whoselectedoneoftheprovidedtopics.Participantswere
thenpresentedwithshortfactualstatements,followedbyoptionstoeitherlearnmoreaboutthesametopic(specific
informationseeking)orswitchtoanewtopic(diverseinformationseeking).Theycouldreadupto10factsfor
eachtopicandupto80factsintotalacrossmultipletopics,wishedreadingeachfactandmakingtheirchoices.
Datawerecollectedonhowmanyfactseach.
Thefactswerepresentedinarandomorder,andtheparticipantscouldspendasmuchtimeastheyparticipant
read,whethertheychosetocontinuereadingwithinatopicorswitch,andtheirself-reportedcuriosityinthe
material.
Theresultsrevealedsignificantage-relateddifferencesininformation-seekingstrategies.Olderparticipants
readmorefactspertopic,showingaclearpreferencefordeepeningtheirknowledgeratherthanbroadeningit.In
contrast,youngerparticipantsexhibitedmorediverseinformationseeking,frequentlyswitchingbetweentopicsto
exploreawiderrangeofmaterial.Foreachadditionalyearinage,participantswereslightlymorelikelytostay
withinatopicandlesslikelytoexploreanewone.
Additionally,theresearchersfoundthatparticipants5self-reportedcuriositywererelatedtotheirinformation-
seekingchoices.Participantswhoratedthemselvesasmoreinterestedinafactweremorelikelytocontinuewithin
thesametopic.
Thishasimplicationsforhownewinformationshouldbecommunicatedtodifferentagegroupsinorderto
bestsupportmotivatedlearning.Thisconsiderationhasavastrangeofpotentialapplications,fromeducational
coursedesigntomuseumexhibitarrangementstotheprovisionofhealthinformation.
