OnSunday,Nicholas,ateenager,wentskiingwithhisfatheratSugarloafMountaininMaine.TheyhadawonderfuldayanddecidedtodrivehometoMassachusettsafterafinalrun.Theytookachairlifttothetopofthemountain,wheretheysplituptogodownindifferenttrails.Whenthefatherfinishedhisrun,heheadedtotheparkinglottowaitforhisson.However,Nicholasnevershowedup.

ItturnedoutthatafiercesnowstormhadsweptintotheareaasNicholaswasonhiswaydown.Unabletoseefar,heaccidentallyturnedoff(拐出)thepathandventureddownthewestsideofthemountain.Beforeheknewit,Nicholaswaslostandallalone.Hiswaybacktotheskitrailswasblocked.What’sworse,hedidn’thaveanyfoodorwaterwithhim,letalonehiscellphoneorothersupplies.Thesunbegantosinkandhewasgettingcolderbytheminute.

Nicholashadnoideawherehewas.Hetriednottopanic.HethoughtaboutBearGrylls’survivalshowManvs.WildthatheusedtowatchonTV.Intheshow,Gryllsisabandonedinawildareaandhastohelphimselfout.Itwastimetoputthetipshehadlearnedtouse.

Hedecidedtostopmovingaround.Heneededtheenergy,andthewindsweren’tasstronginthevalleywherehestoodastheywereuponthemountain.Plus,therewasabetterchanceofsomeonefindinghimifhestayedput.Thefirstthinghedidwastoseekshelterfromthefreezingwindandsnow.Usinghisskis,Nicholasbuiltasnowcave.Hegatheredahugemassofsnowanddug(dig/dug/dug)outaholeinthemiddle.Thenhepiledbranchesontopofhimself,likeablanket,tostayaswarmashecould.

Wheneveningcame,Nicholaswasreallyhungry.Heatesomesnowanddranksomewaterfromanearbystreamsothathewouldn’tdehydrate(脫水).Thenhereturnedtohiscaveandslept.

WhenNicholasdidn’tshowup,hisfatherrealizedtheremustbesomethingwrong.Thefathercontactedthepolice,andasearchteamwasgatheredtolookforthemissingteenager.Althoughtheweatherconditionswerepoorandthewindwasstillfierce,theydidn’tlosehopeoffindingNicholasalive.Theyknewtheclockwasticking,andNicholasstoodabetterchanceofsurvivaltheearliertheyfoundhim.Theteamsplitup.Oneofthesearcherswhoknewtheareabetterdecidedtosweepamountaintrailheusedtohikeup.

Thenextday,Nicholasheardthesoundofasnowmobile.Withallhisstrength,hemovedtowardsthesoundmanagedtowavehisarms.Thesearcheronthesnowmobilespottedhimandrushedtohisside.Hisfacewaspaleandhisbodytrembledfromthecoldandexhaustion,yethiseyesglimmeredwiththewilltosurvive.Ashewastakentosafety,hesawhisfatherrunningtowardshim,graspinghishandtightlyandmurmuringwordsofreliefandlove.ItwasNicholas’calmnessandbraverythatsavedhim,enablinghimtoreunitewithhisfamily.

Itwas16February2019,at8a.m.whenmygirlfriend,JessikaMcNeill,andIarrivedatUtah’sZionNationalPark.We’dtravelledfromourhomeinMesa,Arizona,tohikethe14-km-longSubwayTrail,sonamedbecauseofitsstunningtunnel-shapedcanyon.Halfwaythroughourtrek,whichincludedclimbingoverbouldersandfordingstreams,thesunshinegavewaytoalightsnow.Soonafter,wereachedtherust-colouredwallsoftheSubwayTrail.Asmallpondstoodinourway,withthetrailcontinuingontheotherside.Becausethepondlookedshallow,webegantowade(涉,蹚)through,withJessikaleadingtheway.

Wecouldn’tcallforhelpbecausetheonlycellreceptionwasbackatthetrailhead,fivehoursawayoverroughterrain.ItoldJessikashehadtohikebackandcallforhelp.Shewasscared—shehadonlyeverhikedwithmeandwaswaryofhikingaloneonatrailtheNationalParkServicecalls“verystrenuous".Butwewereoutofoptions.

Thirtyminutesaftersheleft,itstartedtosnowheavily.Izippedupmyjacketandpulledmyheadinside.AtsomepointInoddedofftosleep.Idon’tknowhowlongIwasout,butIwokeupwithmyupperbodyslip-pingbackwardsintothequicksand.Iquicklyplantedmystickintothedryground,stoppingmyfall.

Iwasexhausted.Ifmyentirebodyeverdidfallin,I’dnevergetout.IthadbeenaboutfivehourssinceJessleft,anditwasgettingdark.

Afewhourslater,Isawalightthroughmyjacket.Iprayeditwasahelicopter,butitwasthemoonlightshiningoverthecanyonwalls.Atthatpoint,IwassoakingwetandknewIwasn'tgoingtomakeit.IstartedtothinkaboutwhatIcoulddotodiefaster.ButIdidn’twanttodrownifIfellbackwardsagain.Thatwouldbetheworstwaytogo.
