problem.Plastictakeshundredsofyearstodecompose,soalltheplasticeverproducedstillexistssomewhere.

Around95%ofplasticsmadearenotrecycled,andlargeamountsenterthesea.Currentscollectthiswasteinlarge

circularsystemscalled“gyres”.OneofthelargestisinthePacificOcean,anareanowknownasthe“GreatPacific

GarbagePatch”.

Theproblemgetsworseasplasticbreaksdownintoverysmallpieces,or“microplastic”.Thisiseatenbyfish

andleadstomassivespeciesloss.Humansalsoeatthesefish,andmicroplastichasevenbeenfoundintapwater

aroundtheworld.Theproblemhasspreadtoofartoignore.TheplasticonHendersonIslandaccountsforjust2

seconds’worthofglobalannualplasticproduction.Thatproductionwillmorethantripleby2050.Thentherewill

bethesameweightofplasticintheseaasfish.

However,therearesomeyoungmindsworkingtocleanupandprotecttheseaforfuturegenerations.While

divinginGreece,youngBoyanSlatnoticedtherewasmoreplasticwastethanfish.Hedecidedrightthento

dedicatehislifetosolvingthisproblem.Previouslytheproblemwasconsideredtoobigtosolve;collectingthe

Boyanthought,whymovethroughtheseawhentheseacanmovethroughyou?Toworkwiththecurrentsand

gyreswouldhelpcollectthewaste.SohestartedTheOceanCleanupproject,whichplacesverylongfloating

barriersinthePacific.Currentsthenconcentratethewastenaturallysoitcanbecollectedandrecycled.Hehopesto

reducethepatchby50%injustfiveyears.
