Meetingsuchdemandsfacesmanyconstraints.Everyyear,citydevelopmenttakesaway
halfamillionhectaresoffarmland.Thecompetitionforwaterbetweenindustriesandfarming
reducestheamountavailableforirrigation(灌溉).Furthermore,thecostoffossilfuels,
whicharenecessaryforfarmingandtransportingfood,continuestoclimb.Thebiggest
challenge,however,isclimatechange,whichisexpectedtoworsendroughts,heatwaves,
andthespreadofharmfulinsects,allofwhichendangercropproduction.
Onepossiblesolutionistousetheincreasinglevelsofcarbondioxide(CO?)inthe
atmospheretohelpcropsgrowbetter.Since1957,CO?levelshaverisenby25%,butlittle
efforthasbeenmadetodevelopcropvarietiesthatusethisextraCO?toproducehigher
