controlsmanyofthecountry'sleadingwebsitesandboastsaninterestingmixofowners,

companiesanywhereinitsmoveonline.Itstillmakesmostofitssales—28billionrand

($3.6billion)intheyeartoMarch—fromprintandpay-television,butitusesthecash

tobuyonlinefirms.TencenthailsfromShenzhen,nearHongKong.Foundedin1998,it

hadrevenuesof$1.8billionin2009.AlthoughbestknownforQQ,apopularinstant-

messagingservicewith567millionusers,muchofitsprofitscomefromonlinegames

andavirtualcurrency,calledQcoins.Userspurchasethiswithrealmoneyanduseitto

buydigitalwares,suchasvirtualweaponstoincreasethepowersoftheiravatars.Despite

theirdifferences,thethreefirmscanbeseenasablock.Foronething,theyare

financiallyintertwined.Naspersownspartofmail,ruandwasanearlyinvestorin

Tencent,ofwhichitnowholds35%.InAprilTencentinvested$300minDST,givingit

astakeofmorethan10%andDSTavaluationofabout$3billion.Tencentalsohasan

interestintheIndianarmofMIH,Naspers'sInternetdivision.Whatismore,thefirmsare

onthesamemission:findingpromisingInternetcompaniesincountrieswhereWestern

investorsrarelydaretogo.DST'sterritoriesarcRussiaanditsneighbours,mostofwhich

arehometooneofitscollectionofcompanies;theseincludesocialnetworkssuchas

VKontakte,ruandNasza-Klasa.pl.NaspershasthelargestpartofInternetfirmsin

developingcountries,forinstanceinBrazil(BuscaPe,acomparison-shoppingsite),India

(ibibo,asocialnetwork)andathomeinSouthAfrica(24.coin,aportal).Tencenthasso

farbeenthemostcautiousofthethree.BesidesitsrecentinvestmentinDSTithassome

minoritystakesingamescompanies,suchasVinaGameinVietnam.Thisinternational

presenceallowsthefirmstoapplylessonstheyhavelearnedinonecountrytoanother.

"Wcspendanenormousamountoftimeonsharingknowledge,'1saysAntoineRoux,the

bossofM1H.Foritspart,DSTknowswhichwebbusinessesworkandhowmuchroom

forgrowththeystillhave,givenacountry'sGDPandInternetpenetration.Alexander

Tamas,apartneratDST,callsthis"geographicalarbiirage".InRussiaDSThasseenhow

quicklysocialnetworkscangrow:latecomerstotheInternet,manyRussiansskippede-

inailandwentrighttosocialnetworkstocommunicateonline.Withadvertisingroubles

(盧布)inshortsupply,DST'scompaniesalsoexperimentedearlywithotherwaysof

makingmoneyfromsocialnetworksandonlinegames,suchaschargingforservicesand
