2、y, by the characters - Jane and Mr.Rochester.They takeon new depthevery time Imeet them.andtheir's is a love story for the ages.CharlotteBronte'sfirstpublished novel,and her most notedwork, is a semi-autobiographical ing-of-age story. Jane isplain, poor, alone and unprotected, but due to her
3、 fierceindependence and strong will she grows and is able to defysociety's expectations of her. This is definitely feministliterature,publishedin1847, way before thebeginningofanyfeminist movement. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why thenovel has had such a wide following since it first came
4、on themarket. It is also one of the first gothic romances publishedand defines the genre.Jane Eyre, who is our narrator,was born intoa poor family。Her parentsdied when she was a small childand the littlegirlwas sent to live with her Uncle and Aunt Reed at Gateshead。Jane's Uncle trulycared forher
5、 and showed his affectionopenly,but Mrs。Reed seemedto hate the orphan, and neglected her whileshe pampered and spoiled her own children。 This unfairtreatment emphasized Jane's status as an unwanted outsider。She was oftenpunished harshly 。 On one oasionher nasty cousinJack picked a fight with her
6、。Janetriedto defend herselfand was lockedinthe terrifying"Red Room"as a result。 Jane'sUncle Reed had died in thisrooma little while before, and Mrs。 Reed knew how frightened shewas ofthe chamber。 SinceJane is the narrator,the reader isgiven a first-hand impression of the child's fe
7、elings, herheightened emotional state at being imprisoned。 Indeed, sheseems almost like an hysterical child, filled with terror andrage 。 She repeatedlycalls her conditionin life"unjust"andis filled with bitterness。Looking into the mirror Jane sees a distorted image ofherself。 She views he
8、r reflection and sees a "strange littlefigure," or "tiny phantom。" Jane has not learned yet tosubordinate her passions to her reason。 Her passions stillerupt unchecked 。 Her isolation in the Red Room is a presentiment of her later isolation from almost every societyand munity 。 T
9、his powerful, beautifully written scene neverfails to move me。Her illness and death could have been avoided if moreattention had been paid to the youths。 Jane stayed at Lowoodfor ten years, eight as a student and two as a teacher 。 and depressed by her surroundings, Jane applied for theTiredposition
10、of governess and found employment at Thornfield。Themansion is owned by a gentleman namedEdward FairfaxRochester 。Her job there wasto teach his ward, an adorablelittleFrenchgirl, Adele。 Over a long period the moody, inscrutableRochester confides in Jane and she in him。The two form an unlikely friends
11、hip and eventually fall inlove 。 Again,Jane's needforlovees to the fore,as does herpassionate nature 。 She blooms 。 A dark, gothic figure, Rochester also has a heart filled with the hope of true loveand futurehappiness with Jane。 Ironically,he has brought allhis misery, past and future, on himse
12、lf。All is not as it seems at Thornfield. There is a strange,ominous woman servant, Grace Poole, who lives and works in anattic room. She keeps to herself and is rarely seen. From thefirst, however, Jane has sensed bizarre happenings at night,when everyone is asleep .There are wild criesalong with vi
13、olentattempts on Rochester's life by a seemingly unknown person.Jane wonders why no one investigatesMrs. Poole. Then a strangeman visits Thornfield and mysteriously disappears with Mr.Rochester. Late that night Jane is asked to sit with the manwhile the lord of the house seeks a doctor's hel
14、p. The man hasbeen seriouslywounded and is weak from loss of blood. He leavesby coach,in a sorrystate,firstthing inthe morning.Jane'squestionsare notanswered directly.Thisvisitwillhave direconsequences on allinvolved.An explosivesecretrevealedwilldestroy allthejoyfulplansthatJane and Rochesterha
15、ve made.Jane, once more will face poverty and isolation.Charlotte Bronte's heroine Jane Eyre, may not have beengraced with beauty or money, but she had a spirit of fire andwas filled with integrity and a sense of independence -charactertraitsthatnever waned inspiteofalltheoppressionshe encounteredinlife.Ms. Brontebringstothe forein"JaneEyre" such issues as: the relations between men and women inthe mid-19 century,women's equality,the treatmentof childrenand of women, religiousfaithand hypocrisy(and thedifferencebetween the two), the realization of selfhood, and th
