Unfortunately most people know grey iron to be brittle and thus believe all cast i

The carbon is present as more or less continuous flakes of graphite within a matrix of normally mostly pearlite but it can also contain some ferrite

This is the cause of the very small plastic elongation before rupture. The graphite flakes makes the iron easy to
