Oneafternoon,justastheschoolwasdismissed,astranger

passedthroughthevillage.Hisdresswasplainandsomewhatold,butneatandclean.Hecarriedacaneinhishand,ontheendofwhichwasaparcel,andheworeabroad-brimmed(寬邊的)hat.

NosoonerhadJamesseenthe

stranger

thanhewinkedtohisplaymates,andsaid,“Nowforsomefun!”Hethensilently

went

towardthestrangerfrombehind,and,knockingoffhishat,ranaway.
