Threestrikingfactshighlightthedramaticshiftinrecentyearsintherelativeeconomicbalanceof"first-world"and"third-world"economies.Lastyear,accordingtotheestimates,emergingeconomiesproducedslightlymorethanhalfofworldoutputmeasuredatpurchasing-powerparity(等值).Second,theyalsoaccountedformorethanhalfoftheincreaseinglobalGDPincurrent-dollarterms.Andthird,perhapsmoststrikingofall,the32biggestemergingeconomies,whichwetrackweeklyinTheEconomistandE,grewinboth2004and2005.Everypreviousyearduringthepastthreedecadessawatleastonecountryinrecession--ifnotadeepcrisis.Someeconomieswillinevitablystumbleoverthecomingyears,but,thankstosounderpolicies,mostcanlookforwardtorapidlong-termgrowth.Theyoungemergingeconomieshavegrownupinmorewaysthanone.

SuchhappeningsarepartofthebiggestshiftineconomicstrengthsincetheemergenceoftheUnitedStatesmorethanacenturyago.AsdevelopingcountriesandtheformerSovietblockhaveembracedmarket-friendlyeconomicreformsandopenedtheirborderstotradeandinvestment,morecountriesareindustrializingthaneverbefore--andmorequickly.DuringtheirindustrialrevolutionsAmericaandBritaintook50yearstodoubletheirrealincomesperhead;todayChinaisachievingthatinasingledecade.Inanopenworld,itismucheasiertocatchupbyadoptingadvancedcountries'technologythanitistobeaneconomicleaderthathastoinventnewtechnologiesinordertokeepgrowing.Theshiftineconomicpowertowardsemergingeconomiesisthereforelikelytocontinue.Thisisreturningtheworldtothesortofstatethatenduredthroughoutmostofitshistory.Peopleforgetthat,untilthelate19thcentury,ChinaandIndiaweretheworld'stwobiggesteconomiesandtoday's"emergingeconomies"accountedforthebulkofworldproduction.

Manybosses,workersandpoliticiansintherichworldfearthatthesuccessofthesenewcomerswillbeattheirownexpense.Butrichcountrieswillgainmorethantheylosefromtheenrichmentofothers.Fearsthatthethirdworldwillstealrich-worldoutputandjobsarebasedontheoldfallacythatanincreaseinonecountry'soutputmustbeattheexpenseofanother's.Butmoreexportsgivedevelopingcountriesmoremoneytospendonimports--mainlyfromdevelopedeconomies.Fastergrowthinpoorcountriesisthereforemorelikelytoincreasetheoutputoftheirrichercounterpartsthantoreduceit.TheemergingeconomiesarehelpingtoliftworldGDPgrowthattheverytimewhentherichworld'sageingpopulationswouldotherwisecausegrowthtoslow.
