IntheUK,therenewabletransportFuelObligationrequiresabout10%ofthefuelssupplied

byfossilfuelcompaniestobe"sustainable”,whichineffectmeansbiofuels.However,theamount

thatcancomefromfoodcropsisat4%atmost,andwillbereducedfurtherto2%in2032.AUK

governmentspokespersonsaid:"biofuels,andotherrenewablefuels,willcontinueplayan

importantpartinhelpingtodecarbonisetransportandmeetourclimategoals.However,tohelp

addresstheglobalfoodpricecrisis,wecontinuetopromotewaste-derivedbiofuelsandare

reducingthepercentageofcropbasedbiofuelsthatcounttowardssuppliertargets.

RePlanetsaysthatalthoughtheoriginalreasonforbiofuelswasasalower

carbonalternativefossilfuels,infact,owingtotheimpactonfood,thefertiliserandenergy

usedtoproducethegrainsandoilsandthelandconvertedtoagriculturetoproducebiofuels,there

islittlecarbonsavingoverfossilfuels.RePlanetalsoarguesthatrichcountriesshouldeatless

meattofreeupgrain,andthatprohibitionsonthegeneticmodificationofcropsshouldbelifted

toachievehigheryields.

Inanotherrecommendationlikelytobecontroversial,thereportsuggeststhatthe

EU'sorganictargetsshouldalsobedesertedinfavourofconventionalandintensivefarming

techniquesforhigherproductivity.KarolinaLissloGylfe,thesecretarygeneralofRePlanet,said:

“IfEuropedoesn'tlookatfindingevidence-basedsolutions,theoutcomewillbeworseforthe

world'spoor,fortheclimateandfornatureconservation.”
