MAVENprincipalinvestigatorBruceJakoskysaysscientistsnowknowthatMarsoncehadamuchdenseratmosphere,butitchangedsignificantlyoverthelastfewbillionyearswhenmostofitsgasesdisappearedintospace.Whattheystilldon’tknowishowandwhythathappened.

“Wearetryingtounderstandwhatthecauseofthatclimatechangehasbeen,andwearelookingattherolethatescapetospacemayhaveplayedinremovingtheatmosphere,andchangingtheatmosphere,”hesaid.

Implicationsofstudy

MAVENwillbeexploringthetoplayersofwhat’sleftoftheMartianatmosphere,becausescientiststhinkthatchargedparticlesemittedbythesun,theso-called“solarwind”,mayhavebeenresponsibleforslowlystrippingawaytheatmosphericgasses,includingwatervapor.

LearningabouthowMarslostitswateriskeytounderstandingiftheplanetmostlikeEarthinthesolarsystemevercouldhavesupportedlife.

Itwilltakefiveweeksforthespacecrafttodeployitsbooms,getcalibratedandbereadyforwork,beforebeginningtheone-yearmissionwhichcarriesapricetagof$671million.

Rightnow,NASA’sengineersarestillcelebratingthefactthatsofarthemissionwentwithoutaglitch.

“Itreallyisanamazingamountofworkthattheteamdidtomakeitlooksosmoothtonight,“hesaid.“Itiskindofcliched,peoplewalkaroundgoing”itisnotrocketscience”,wellsometimesitisrocketscience.”

MAVENhasjoinedtwoAmericanandoneEuropeanspacecraftorbitingtheRedPlanet,togetherwiththreeroversstilloperatingonitssurface.Intwodays,India’sfirstMarsexplorershouldenteritsorbitwhereitwillalsoconductatmosphericmeasurements.

MavenisNASA”s21stshotatMarsandthefirstsincetheCuriosityroverlandedontheredplanetin2022.
