Teacherburnoutandstudentstressmaybelinked,accordingtoaUniversityofBritishColumbiastudy.Thestudyisthefirstofitskindtoexaminetheconnectionbetweenteacherburnoutandstudents'cortisollevels,whichareabiologicalindicator1ofstress.Researcherscollectedsaliva2samplesfromover400elementaryschoolchildrenandtestedtheircortisollevels.Theyfoundthatinclassroomsinwhichteachersexperiencedmoreburnout,orfeelingsofemotionalexhaustion3,students'cortisollevelswereelevated.Highercortisollevelsinelementaryschoolchildrenhavebeenlinkedtolearningdifficultiesaswellasmentalhealthproblems."Thissuggeststhatstresscontagion4mightbetakingplaceintheclassroomamongstudentsandtheirteachers,"saidEvaOberle,thestudy'sleadauthorandnewlyappointedassistantprofessorwiththeHumanEarlyLearningPartnership5(HELP)atUBC'sschoolofpopulationandpublichealth."Itisunknownwhatcamefirst-elevatedcortisolorteacherburnout.Weconsidertheconnectionbetweenstudentandteacherstressacyclicalproblemintheclassroom."Oberlesaidastressfulclassroomclimatecouldbearesultofinadequate6supportforteachers,whichmayimpactteachers'abilitytoeffectivelymanagetheirstudents.Apoorlymanagedclassroomcancontributetostudents'needsnotbeingmetandincreasingstress.Thiscouldbereflectedinelevatedcortisollevelsinstudents.Alternatively,stresscouldoriginatefromstudents,whomaybemorechallengingtoteachbecauseofincreasesinanxiety,behaviouralproblems,orspecialneeds.Inthisscenario7,teacherscouldfeeloverwhelmedandreporthigherlevelsofburnout."Ourstudyisareminder8ofthesystemicissuesfacingteachersandeducatorsasclassroomsizesincreaseandsupportsforteachersarecut,"saidOberle."Itisclearfromanumberofrecentresearchstudiesthatteachingisoneofthemoststressfulprofessions,andthatteachersneedadequateresourcesandsupportintheirjobsinordertobattleburnoutandalleviate9stressintheclassroom,"saidUBCeducationprofessorKimberlySchonert-Reichl,thestudy'sco-authoranddirectorofHELP."Ifwedonotsupportteachers,weriskthecollateral10damageofstudents."1
