Abstract:

Mastalgia,alsoknownasbreastpain,isacommoncomplaintamongwomen.TraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM)hasseveralformulasandherbsthatareusedtotreatmastalgia.Inthispaper,wereviewtheclinicaleffectivenessofTCMintreatingmastalgia.

Introduction:

Mastalgiaisacommoncomplaintamongwomen.Itcanbedividedintocyclicandnon-cyclicmastalgia.Cyclicmastalgiaoccursinrelationtoawoman’smenstrualcycleandisoftenduetohormonalfluctuations.Non-cyclicmastalgiacanbeduetoavarietyofcauses,includingbreastabscesses,fibroadenomas,orcostochondritis.Manywomenmayexperiencebothtypesofmastalgia.InWesternmedicine,non-steroidalanti-inflammatorydrugs(NSAIDs)orhormonaltherapyareoftenusedtotreatmastalgia.However,thesetreatmentsmayhavesideeffects.Therefore,TraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM)hasgainedattentionasacomplementarytreatmentformastalgia.

TCMtreatmentofmastalgia:

TCMoffersseveralformulasandherbsforthetreatmentofmastalgia.Thefollowingaresomeexamples:

1.TaoHongSiWuTang

TaoHongSiWuTangisaformulathatistraditionallyusedtotreatgynecologicaldisorders.Itcontainsfourherbs:TaoRen,HongHua,DangGui,andChuanXiong.Thisformulanourishestheblood,regulatesqi,andeliminatesstasis.Itiscommonlyusedtotreatmenstrualdisorders,includingmastalgia.

2.GuiZhiFuLingWan

GuiZhiFuLingWanisaformulathatistraditionallyusedtotreatgynecologicaldisorders.Itcontainsfiveherbs:GuiZhi,FuLing,BaiShao,TaoRen,andMuDanPi.Thisformularegulatestheblood,eliminatesstasis,andresolvesphlegm.Itiscommonlyusedtotreatmastalgiaduetobreastlumps.

3.DaHuangMuDanTang

DaHuangMuDanTangisaformulathatistraditionallyusedtotreatbreastabscesses.Itcontainsthreeherbs:DaHuang,MuDanPi,andZhiZi.Thisformulaclearsheat,eliminatestoxins,anddispelsstasis.

4.BaiZhi

BaiZhiisaherbthatistraditionallyusedtotreatmastalgiaduetobreastabscesses.Itisknownforitsabilitytopromotebloodcirculation,reduceinflammation,andrelievepain.

ClinicaleffectivenessofTCMintreatingmastalgia:

SeveralstudieshaveinvestigatedtheeffectivenessofTCMintreatingmastalgia.Inarandomizedcontrolledtrial,80womenwithmastalgiaweretreatedwitheitheraTCMformulaoraplaceboforsixmonths.ThewomenwhoreceivedtheTCMformulahadsignificantlyreducedbreastpainandtendernesscomparedtotheplacebogroup(Lietal.,2016).

Inanotherstudy,40womenwithcyclicalmastalgiaweretreatedwithacupunctureoraplacebofortwomenstrualcycles.Thewomenwhoreceivedacupuncturehadsignificantlyreducedbreastpaincomparedtotheplacebogroup(Linetal.,2012).

AsystematicreviewofTCMtreatmentformastalgiafoundthatTCMwaseffectiveinreducingbreastpainandtenderness(Zhangetal.,2018).

Conclusion:

TCMoffersseveralformulasandherbsforthetreatmentofmastalgia.ClinicalstudieshaveshownthatTCMiseffectiveinreducingbreastpainandtenderness.Therefore,TCMmayserveasacomplementarytreatmentformastalg
