TheBrailleFamilyHomeSomeFamousInventionsBISomeFamousDiscoveriesBI-LouisLouisBraille(1809—1852)LouisBraillewasablindFrenchmanwhoinventedthebraillesystemofprintingandwritingfortheblind.HewasbornnearParis.Anaccidentatage3followedbyaseriousinfectionlefthimblind.HeenteredtheRoyalInstitutionforBlindYouthinParis(nowtheNationalInstitutionforBlindYouth)whenhewas10.Braillewasagoodstudent,especiallyofscienceandmusic,andhebecameachurchorganist.HeremainedattheInstituteasateacher.Therehedevelopedhissystemofreading.(Fromthe1998WorldBookMultimediaEncyclopedia)BrailleBrailleisacodeofsmall,raiseddotsonpaperthatcanbereadbytouch.LouisBraille,a15-yearoldblindFrenchstudent,developedaraiseddotreadingsystemin1824.TheideacametohimfromthedotcodepunchedoncardboardthatCaptainCharlesBarbierusedtosendmessagestohissoldiersatnight.In1829,Braillepublishedadotsystem,basingitona“cell“ofsixdots.Fromthe63possiblearrangementsofthedots,Brailleworkedoutanalphabet,punctuationmarks,numerals,and,later,asystemforwritingmusic.Hiscodewasnotofficiallyacceptedatonce.Butlateritwonuniversalacceptanceforallwrittenlanguagesandformathematics,science,andcomputernotation.Blindpeoplereadbraillebyrunningtheirfingersalongonthedots.Theycanwritebrailleona6-keymachinecalledabraillewriter,orwitha
