ownbodies,ratherthanthattheyshouldbetaughttothinkmoreexactly.Thisconfusion
ofmeaning,whichispartlydeliberate,hasinitagreatdanger.Impliedinthedemandfor
morescientificeducationistheclaimthatifonehasbeenscientificallytrainedone's
approachtoallsubjectswillbemoreintelligentthanifonehadhadnosuchtraining.A
scientist'spoliticalopinions,itisassumed,hisopinionsonsociologicalquestions,on
morals,onphilosophy,perhapsevenonthearts,willbemorevaluablethanthoseofa
layman.Buta"scientist",aswehavejustseen,meansinpracticeaspecialistinoneofthe

Itisoftenlooselysaidthat"Scienceisinternational",butinpracticethescientific
workersofallcountrieslineupbehindtheirowngovernmentswithfewerscruplesthan
arefeltbythewritersandtheartists.TheGermanscientificcommunity,asawhole,made
noresistancetoHitler.Therewereplentyofgiftedmentodothenecessaryresearchon
suchthingsassyntheticoil,jetplanes,rocketprojectilesandtheatomicbomb.Onthe
otherhand,whathappenedtoGermanliteraturewhentheNaziscametopower?Ibelieve
noexhaustivelistshavebeenpublished,butIimagine(hatthenumberofGerman
scientists-Jewapart—whovoluntarilyexiledthemselvesorwerepersecutedbythe
