isspecifictoagivencontext.Theeffectivenessofyouractionsisassessedinrelationto
thecontextandtotheconditionsunderwhichyoutookthem.ForamagazinearticleI
wroterecently,Iinterviewedonepublishingexecutive,authorofseveralwell-known
publications,aboutwhateffectiveleadershipis.Itwassignificantthat,atfirst,hedidnot
mentionhisowncompany.Hetalkedatlengthaboutwhatwashappeningintheindustry
-themergers,take-oversandglobalnatureofthebusiness.Beforehewasableto
describehisownobjectivesforthenewpublishingorganisationhewassettingup,hehad
toseeaclearfitbetweentheseproposalsandthelargersituationoutside.Obvious?Of
course.ButIhavelostcountofthenumberofleadersIhavecoachedwhobelievedthat
theirideaswerevalid,whateverthesituation.Atthispoint,Ishouldalsomentionanother
example,thatofafinancedirectorwhoseplanofactionwasnotwellreceived.The
companyhehadjoinedhadgrownsteadilyfortwentyyears,servingclientswhowerein
themaindistrustfulofanyproductthatwastoorevolutionary.Thefinancedirectorsaw
potentialchallengesfromcompetitorsandwantedhisorganisationtomovewiththe
times.Unfortunately,moststaffbelowhimwereunwillingtochange.Iconcludedthat
althoughtherewerecertainlysomepersonalskillshecouldimproveupon,whathemost
neededtodowastocommunicateeffectivelywithhissubordinates,sothattheyallfeltat
easewithhisdifferentapproach.Someeffectiveleadersbelievetheycancontrol
uncertaintybecausetheyknowwhattheorganisationshouldbedoingandhowtodoit.
Withintheorganisationitself,expertiseisusuallygreatlyvalued,andexecutivesare
expected,astheyrisewithinthesystem,toknowmorethanthosebeneaththemand,
therefore,tomanagetheoperation.Agoodexampleofthiswouldbeafirmof
accountantsIvisited.Theirbusinesswasbuiltonsellingreliableexpertisetotheclient,
whonaturallywantsuncertaintytobesomethingonlyothercompanieshavetoface.
Withinthisfirm,givingtherightanswerwasgreatlyvalued,andmistakeswereclearlyto
beavoided.Iamparticularlyinterestedinwhataimsleadershaveandwhattheirrole
shouldbeinhelpingtheorganisationachieveitsstrategicaims.Someleadersarehighly
ineffectivewhentheaimdoesn'tfitwiththeneed,suchasthemanufacturingmanager
