ACEA’s‘VehiclesonEuropeanRoads’reportisthego-topublicationforthelatestinformationonthenumberofvehiclescurrentlyincirculationonEurope’sroads.Ourreportincludeskeydata,suchastheaveragevehicleage,vehiclepowertypes,vehicleownership,andmoreessentialinformationforunderstandingoursector.

ComplementingACEA’sregularcar,van,truck,andbussalesupdates,thisuniquereportprovidesa

snapshotofwhatthe‘fleet’ofvehiclesonEurope’sroadslooklike.Thereportisrevealing,demonstratingjusthowthesalesdataofdifferentvehicletypes,suchasbattery-electricvehicles(BEVs),tellavery

differentstorytotheactualmakeupofvehiclesonEurope’sroads.

Despitebattery-electriccarsnowbeingthethirdmostpopularchoicefornewcarbuyers,withamarketshareof13.6%ofEUregistrations,theyonlyrepresent1.8%ofpassengercarsonEUroads,showcasingjusthowfurtherwemustgotomakezero-emissionmobilityareality.

Thedataunderlinesaveryimportantfact:itcantakeyears,evendecades,foroldervehiclestobereplacedbynewermodelsthatareequippedwithcleanerandgreenertechnologies.Oldervehiclestypicallypossesslessefficienttechnologiesthatproducemoreemissionsandpollutionthanmodernmodels.

Thisemphasisestheimportanceofensuringthattheseoldervehiclesareswiftlyreplacedbythegreenest,cleanest,andsafestmodelsthatourindustryhasbeeninvestingheavilyin.

Oncemore,thisyear’seditionfoundthattheaverageageofallvehicletypes,exceptbuses,isgraduallyrising,whilethenumberofvehiclesonroadshasincreasedonceagain.Therewere249millionpassengercarsonEUroadsin2023,a1.4%increasefromthepreviousyear.

Thenumberofvans,trucks,andbusesonroadsisalsorising,reinforcingtheimportanceofalso

acceleratingtheuptakeofbattery-electricandotherzero-emissionmodelsinEuropeforthesevehiclesegments.Ofallvehicletypes,busesleadtheway,withalmosta2.5%sharebeingbattery-electric

vehicles.

Thecarcontinuestobuildonitspopularityasanimportantmeansoftransport,withthenumberofcarsper1,000inhabitantsgrowingyetagain.Infact,thedatahasbeenconsistentinshowingthatthemajorityofEuropeanhouseholdsstillownacarinthecountriesstudied.

Thereportdemonstratesthatwhilelegislativetargetscanhelpsteerchange,thisisonlyonesmallpartofthepuzzlethatisthedecarbonisationofroadtransport.Europeneedsarealisticpathwaytodecarbonisingtheautomotiveindustry.ThetransformationinEuropeisnotprogressingatthepacerequired.

Theecosystemasawholemustbecomemoreattractivetocustomersandthecurrentregulatory

frameworkshouldberevisedtofosterabroadersetofenablingconditions,suchascharginginfrastructureandpurchaseandtaxincentives,tostimulatedemandfornewmodelsandreplenishvehiclesonEurope’sroadswiththecleanestandgreenestmodels.
