FrancesMcGIannangrewupinBaltimore,Maryland,andmovedtoMiamiintheearly

1950swithherhusband.Thecouplehadtwochildren,MichaelandGenevieve,andbythe

timeMichaelenteredelementaryschoolitwasclearthathehaddifficultyreading.

Shedecidedtotackleitandfindoutwhatitwasherselfbecauseshewasn'tgettingany

answerstothequestionsshewasasking.McGIannansearchedthelibraryforinformation

andstartedworkingattheUniversityofMiamiReadingClinic,whereshetutoredchildren

andhelpedconductresearch.ShealsofoundedtheDadeReadingFoundation,avolunteer

groupthatsharedinformationaboutdyslexia(閱讀障礙)withteachers,parentsandthelocal

schoolboard.

Intheearly1960s,McGIannantravelledtoEurope,whereshelearnednewtechniquesto

helpchildrenovercomelearningdisabilities.Shealsoadaptedmulti-sensorytechniquesto

helpdyslexicchildrenlearntoread.In1964,McGIannanfoundedtheMcGIannanSchoolfor

childrenwithdyslexiaandrelatedlearningdifficulties.

McGIannandidallofthiswhileraisingtwochildrenandoftenworkedpastmidnighttoget

everythingdone.However,balancingworkandfamilywasn'ttheonlychallengeMcGIannan

faced.Shewasalsoridiculedbyeducatorsanddoctorswhobelievedchildrenwithdyslexia

couldn'tbetaught.ButMcGIannanwasnotdiscouraged.Inadditiontorunningtheschool,

sheconvincedapublishertostartascientificjournaldevotedtothestudyoflearning

disabilities,wheresheservedasoneoftheeditors.Shealsohelpedpassthe1975Education

forAllHandicappedChildrenAct,whichestablishedtherightsofchildrenwithdisabilities.

Andinthe1980s,McGlannanreachedouttoteachersandpublicationsinLatinAmericato

shareinformationaboutdyslexiaandteachingtechniquesinSpanish.

McGlannan^tirelesseffortsaffectedthousandsofchildreninSouthFlorida.Herlegacy(遺
