This immersion centre was made possible through former school trustee Norman Fenn, who donated the thirteen acres of land on Regional Road 6 of the forme

4、r Osgoode Township. Embodied in the Castor Valley mission statement are the values of community and family. With the best interests of our children as our primary focus, teachers and parents work together in all aspects of school life. We are dedicated to making our school a place where students ach

5、ieve in an atmosphere that is comfortable, focuses on the development of their character and offers lots of opportunity for developing all aspects of each student as a person. Our school is a vibrant place that offers much for every student, each and every day.Our StudentsOur total enrolment in Sept

6、ember 2013 was 588. We are the Early French Immersion Centre for the villages of Metcalfe, Greely and for some areas of rural Osgoode. Upon completion of grade 8, our students attend Osgoode Township High School for French Immersion and for English, Lisgar High School for the gifted program, Colonel

7、 By for the International Baccalaureate Program and Canterbury High School for the Performing Arts.Our StaffWe are 29 teachers who have a wide-range of educational backgrounds, expertise and interests who work co-operatively to provide a challenging and stimulating French Immersion Program. Teachers

8、 are assisted by a committed team of Educational Assistants, Office Administrator, Office Assistant, Library Technician, Chief Custodian, Evening Custodial Staff, Vice-Principal and Principal.Our CommunityParents and CommunityParents have established a very active School Council whose primary goals

9、are to foster open communication among all stakeholders in the education system and to enhance the learning environment for our students in order to improve student achievement. School Council maintains its own website and produces a monthly electronic newsletter. Participation in School Council giv

10、es parents an opportunity to keep abreast of current issues and to provide input to teaching and school administrative staff, the Board and the Ministry of Education. School Council is an active member of OCASC (Ottawa Carleton Assembly of School Councils) and an associate member of Canadian Parents

11、 for French. Many parent volunteers enhance the spirit of community through school-wide programs, events and fundraising. We work to foster connections within our community through local media, inviting community volunteers to participate in school programs, events and fundraising and by raising awa

13、d in English with 20 minutes of FrenchGrades 1 100% French instructionGrades 2 and 3 - 80 % French instruction and 20% EnglishGrades 4 to 6 - 60 % French and 40% EnglishGrade 7 and 8 - 50% both official languages.It is important to emphasize that the French Immersion Program is designed for children

14、 who speak English at home. It is not necessary for parents to speak French themselves.Classroom OrganizationCastor Valley ES offers junior kindergarten to grade 8 Early French Immersion. Our 27 homerooms include 5 kindergarten classes, 9 primary classes, 7 junior classes and 5 intermediate classes.

15、Special Education and ESL ProgramsOur Learning Support Teacher (LST) and our .5 Learning Resource Teacher (LRT) collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents and students to ensure that all learning needs are identified and met. Student programs currently in place to support our students includ

16、e; the Early Literacy Program for our kinder students, a volunteer-led booster support for our hesitant primary readers, daily Intermediate extra help sessions, an OCDSB Student Success Initiative, Intermediate Guidance Initiative, an Early Intervention Social Skills program (grade 8), and Counsello

17、r from the Rideauwood Addiction and Substance Abuse Centre.Clubs and ActivitiesOrganized physical activities include: Soccer Volleyball Basketball Cross-Country Running Badminton Touch Football Snowshoeing Downhill Skiing Winter Activity Days (gr. 6-8) Track and FieldStudents can also participate in

18、: Field trips Spirit Days Terry Fox Run/Walk Jump Rope for Heart Concert band, Percussion Group Choirs and Vocal EnsembleLeadership and citizenship skills are developed and demonstrated through such programs as Intermediate Student Ambassadors, Kelsos Pals (playground activity leaders), milk & lunch

19、time monitors, Green Team and Recycling programs and in participation of charitable events such as food drives, Education Foundations Toonie Tuesday and various other student initiated fundraising activities to benefit others in need. CVES has been recognized by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundat

20、ion as the elementary school in Ontario that has raised the most money through the Jump Rope for Heart event for the past three years. Many organizations greatly benefit from the active participation and commitment of our students and their families in such events.Safe Schools InitiativesThe Castor

21、Valley School Community is committed to a learning environment that provides a safe and secure place to work and play, characterized by mutual respect, which fosters the development of each childs greatest potential. We provide our children with the opportunity to develop independent and collaborati

22、ve work skills, to care and value our environment, to think critically and to acquire the necessary fundamental knowledge and skills to become contributing members of society.At Castor Valley, we weave positive character development traits into our curriculum planning and delivery. Our goal is to de

23、velop students skills and abilities; not solely in academics but also to develop their values and build character in order to behave as responsible members of our society.All students have received training by Jennifer Laale, Founder of Be Your Best, on how to let go of fear, build trust among their

24、 peers, be better listeners and be more accepting.Facilities and ResourcesCastor Valley is a French Immersion School in a rural setting. This wooden building, reminiscent of a barn, is designed to fit well into the farming community. The inside is filled with natural light from wide windows strategi

25、cally placed in roofs and walls. Our 8 portables face our outdoor learning area and playgrounds. Included in our school are specialized rooms for music, computers, sciences, a double gymnasium and a beautiful library. We are proud to use SMART boards, ELMO projectors, digital cameras and media carts

26、 as tools to supplement and deliver our lessons in an engaging way.Google Map of Castor Valley Elementary SchoolAchievement and School Improvement PlanningMeasures of Student Achievement and SuccessAt Castor Valley there are many measures of student achievement:Formal reporting to parents occurs thr

27、ee times a year through a progress report (Nov. 7), two report cards (Feb. 5 and June 27), and parent/teacher consultations. Assessments of reading through PM benchmarks, GB+ benchmarks, valuation rapide de la comprhension en lecture and kinder ELOT provide us with information on student progress, a

28、nd guide the delivery of instruction. We use these tools along with EQAO results to plan improvement initiatives for our school.As well, students participate and demonstrate great success in areas of Music, Math (Caribou Math, Gauss Math). In the area of athletics, our students perform consistently

29、well at meets for cross-country and track and field. Our junior and intermediate students have won numerous banners at regional tournaments in various sports.Grade 8 School Leaving Awards honour students for excellence in academics, athletics, the arts, citizenship, character and outstanding contrib

30、utions to our school.Combined with EQAO results our school improvement initiatives are based on the above.School Improvement Plans and InitiativesThe Castor Valley staff has identified the following areas for improvement for the 2012-13 year.NumeracyA continued focus in the area of Number Sense and

31、Numeration through the application of critical thinking strategies to solve problems to improve achievement and student success. Continued implementation of the Targeted Implementation Program Support (TIPS, Intermediate), Nelson Math and continued implementation of the three part math lesson and us

32、e of manipulatives.Oral CommunicationA new focus will be placed on ensuring students receive the required instructional support and effective feedback to use precise vocabulary to communicate deep thinking. Students need to be prepped for successful accountable talk to facilitate thought provoking d

33、iscussions and to engage in and communicate critical thinking. As this is neither subject nor language specific, this is a focus across all grades and most, if not all subject areas, as well.Embedding Character DevelopmentTeachers continue to embed into their long-range plans the explicit teaching o

34、f the character traits. Using varied texts, stories and activities, students are consolidating their knowledge about the OCDSBs Community of Character. School-based initiatives such as Internet and Social Media Safety and anti-bullying presentations contribute to our overall goal of developing and n

35、urturing respectful relationships. A Bullying Prevention and Intervention School Plan has been developed by Staff and Parents to ensure that all students and staff are free from harm and risk and feel happy and included.Leadership Recognition“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal

36、initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”StudentsOur incredible students have reached many school wide and individual fundraising goals, both large scale and small scale from a school-wide Dance-a-thon to raise money and awareness about Clean Water Initiatives (Free the Children) or collecting fund

37、s in support of Operation Come Home to participating in Toonie Tuesday to support the OCDSB Education Foundation. On a few occasions, we have sent intermediate students to participate in the WE conference and will be sending a team of CVES students to this years WE conference in Ottawa. An ongoing c

38、ampaign to collect pop tabs to purchase wheelchairs for the March of Dimes continues as a school wide effort. The students have been formally recognized by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation as the elementary school to raise the most money in Ontario through the Jump Rope for Heart event. Our

39、community fosters, through these efforts, a strong sense of citizenship.Our students show leadership skills in all aspects of our sports program winning regional and Board championships in various sports. This attests to the effort our students put into our strong intramural programs offered by our

40、teachers where our intermediate students take a leading role.StaffThe staff at Castor Valley brings a wealth of professional qualifications to our school community. These include Bachelors and Masters degrees in Arts, Fine Arts, Linguistics, Music, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sciences, Technolo

41、gy and Police College. In addition, we have additional qualifications in Special Education, Reading, Music, French as a Second Language, Visual Arts and Computers in Education. Our teachers serve at the Board level, taking part in Leadership training, in Mentoring initiatives for our beginning teach

42、ers as well as many other curriculum related opportunities. They have actively participated in numerous Board wide professional development activities in Literacy, Numeracy, Health & Safety and Equity.Parents/Guardians/VolunteersOur parent community contributes countless hours of volunteer work to C

43、astor Valley to enrich the learning environment for our students and staff. Fundraising efforts contribute a substantial dollar amount each year to support needs within our school and to fund improvement projects. Parent volunteers: ensure the beautification and maintenance of our school yard and successfully raised the funds to replace two play structures; plan and deliver an alternative lunch program and daily milk program; organize annual events includ
