27、I faced an enjoyable yet formidable challenge. I was returning to my old neighborhood in the South Bronx to speak to the students of m old school, Morris High. As we drove down streets where my friend Gene Norman and I used to race bicycles, I thought of the pitfalls awaiting the kids living here, t
28、he drugs, the temptations, and the crime. What could I say to encourage them? As we passed the hamburger place that I used to haunt, I remembered my growing-up years here, the joys, the sorrows, and the choices. Even then kids face choices. There were drugs in my neighbourhood and a youngster could
29、gain easy access to them if tempted. But in my family, the decision was simple: you just didnt do it. We knew it was stupid and the most self-destructive thing you could do with the life God had given you. At age of 17 I found a summer job in a local soft-drink bottling plant at 90 cents an hour. I
30、was thrilled. On my first day of work, having joined the ranks of other newly hired teenagers, I was full of enthusiasm. The bottling machines caught my eye, but only the white boys worked there. I was hired as a ported and the foreman handed me a mop. I got to work. I mopped what seemed like acres
31、of sticky, cola-stained floor I decided to be the best mop wielder there ever was. Right to left, left to right. One day someone let 50 cases of cola crash to the cement, and brown sticky foam cascaded across the floor. It was almost more than I could bear. But I kept on mopping. Right to left, left
32、 to right. As our car rolled on, our drivers voice broke my reverie. “ were here, General.” I looked up at my old school it hadnt changed much. As I walked up its familiar stone steps I remembered acing up them to beat the bell. The setting for my talk to the student body was the gymnasium. “I remem
33、ber this place”, I told the students. “ I remember it all. I remember running through Van Cortland Park with the track team, the rout I used to take each day from my home to Kelly Street to school.” “ I also remember, upon occasions, experiencing the feeling you cant make it”, I continued. “But you
34、can. When I was coming up, opportunities were limited. But now the opportunities are there to be anything you want to be. But wanting to be isnt enough dreaming about it isnt enough. Youve got to study for it, work for it, fight for it with al your heart, energy and soul so that nothing will be deni
35、ed you. I wanted them to make the right choices, to work hard and not lose sight of a dream. And I wanted them to know that someone is always watching. 1. 43、e had begun his motion picture career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine even more than my mother. This evening it was almost 8 oclock when my father burst in. He was an hour late for dinner. His mood seemed thunderous. He could not sit down but circled the long
44、dining-room table with a drink in his hand, calling down terrible oaths(詛咒)on his employees. Imagine, we would have finished the picture tonight, my father was shouting. Instead that moron suddenly gets it into her beautiful empty, little head that she cant play the last scene. So the whole company
45、has to stand there at $ 1,000 a minute while this silly little blank walks off the set! And now I have to beg her to come back! He wheeled(旋轉(zhuǎn))in his pacing(踱步), paused and glared at his plate. There was a suspenseful silence. What is this? He was reaching for my poem. Ben, a wonderful thing has happ
46、ened, my mother began. Buddy has written his first poem! And its beautiful, absolutely amaz If you dont mind, Id like to decide for myself. Father said. I kept my face lowered to my plate as he read that poem. It was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear him dropping the poem bac
47、k on the table. Now came the moment of decision. I think its lousy, he said. I couldnt look up. My eyes were getting wet. Ben, sometimes I dont understand you, my mother was saying. This is just a little boy. Youre not in your studio now. These are the first lines of poetry hes ever written. He need
48、s encouragement. I dont know why, my father held his ground. Isnt there enough lousy poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet. I couldnt stand it another second. I ran from the dining-room up to my room, threw myself on the bed and sobbed. When I had cried the worst of the
49、 disappointment out of me, I could hear my parents still quarreling over my first poem at the dinner table. That may have been the end of the anecdote but not of its significance for me. A few years later I took a second look at the first poem, and reluctantly I had to agree with my fathers harsh ju
50、dgment. It was a pretty lousy poem. After a while, I worked up the courage to show him something new, a short story. My father thought it was overwritten but not hopeless. I was learning to rewrite. And my mother was learning that she could criticize me without crushing me. You might say we were all
51、 learning. I was going on 12. As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, Buddy, did you really write this? I think its wonderful! and a father who shook his head no and drove me to tears with, l thin

A writer in fact every one of us in life needs that mother force, the loving force from which all creation flows; and yet the mother force alone is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive.
