Onehundredandsixtyyearsago,whenCharlotteBrontecreatedJaneEyre,shecouldhaveneverthoughtthatitwouldbeeeternal.Asamatteroffact,intheworldoftoday,therearetensofthousandsofJaneEyre,eachlivinginareader'sheart,breathingwithhimthesameairandsharingwithhimthesamehappinessandsorrow.Herrichmentalworldhasbeeaninexhaustibleresourceofspirtualpower.FromJaneEyre,peoplewhoaretimidandshygetconfidenceandself-respect;peoplewhofeelimprisonedgetindependenceandfreedom;peoplewhoarelonesomegetloveandcare.However,whatIgetfromJaneEyreisthecourageofinnerqestioningandself-exploring.

JaneEyreisayoungorphanbeingraisedbyMrs.Reed,hercruel,wealthyaunt.AservantnamedBessieprovidesJanewithsomeofthefewkindnessesshereceives,tellingherstoriesandsingingsongstoher.Oneday,aspunishmentforfightingwithherbullyingcousinJohnReed,Jane"sauntimprisonsJaneinthered-room,theroominwhichJane"sUncleReeddied.Whilelockedin,Jane,believingthatsheseesheruncle"sghost,screamsandfaints.ShewakestofindherselfinthecareofBessieandthekindlyapothecaryMr.Lloyd,whosuggeststoMrs.ReedthatJanebesentawaytoschool.ToJane"sdelight,Mrs.Reedconcurs.

OnceattheLowoodSchool,Janefindsthatherlifeisfarfromidyllic.Theschool"sheadmasterisMr.Brocklehurst,acruel,hypocritical,andabusiveman.Brocklehurstpreachesadoctrineofpovertyandprivationtohisstudentswhileusingtheschool"sfundstoprovideawealthyandopulentlifestyleforhisownfamily.AtLowood,JanebefriendsayounggirlnamedHelenBurns,whosestrong,martyrlikeattitudetowardtheschool"smiseriesisbothhelpfulanddispleasingtoJane.AmassivetyphusepidemicsweepsLowood,andHelendiesofconsumption.TheepidemicalsoresultsinthedepartureofMr.BrocklehurstbyattractingattentiontotheinsalubriousconditionsatLowood.AfteragroupofmoresympatheticgentlementakesBrocklehurst"splace,Jane"slifeimprovesdramatically.ShespendseightmoreyearsatLowood,sixasastudentandtwoasateacher.

Afterteachingfortwoyears,Janeyearnsfornewexperiences.SheacceptsagovernesspositionatamanorcalledThornfield,wheresheteachesalivelyFrenchgirlnamedAdegrave;le.ThedistinguishedhousekeeperMrs.Fairfaxpresidesovertheestate.Jane"semployeratThornfieldisadark,impassionedmannamedRochester,withwhomJanefindsherselffallingsecretlyinlove.ShesavesRochesterfromafireonenight,whichheclaimswasstartedbyadrunkenservantnamedGracePoole.ButbecauseGracePoolecontinuestoworkatThornfield,Janeconcludesthatshehasnotbeentoldtheentirestory.JanesinksintodespondencywhenRochesterbringshomeabeautifulbutviciouswomannamedBlancheIngram.JaneexpectsRochestertoproposetoBlanche.ButRochesterinsteadproposestoJane,whoacceptsalmostdisbelievingly.

Theweddingdayarrives,andasJaneandMr.Rochesterpreparetoexchangetheirvows,thevoiceofMr.MasoncriesoutthatRochesteralreadyhasawife.MasonintroduceshimselfasthebrotherofthatwifeawomannamedBertha.Mr.MasontestifiesthatBertha,whomRochestermarriedwhenhewasayoungmaninJamaica,isstillalive.RochesterdoesnotdenyMason"sclaims,butheexplainsthatBerthahasgonemad.HetakestheweddingpartybacktoThornfield,wheretheywitnesstheinsaneBerthaMasonscurryingaroundonallfoursandgrowlinglikeananimal.RochesterkeepsBerthahiddenonthethirdstoryofThornfieldandpaysGracePooletokeephiswifeundercontrol.Berthawastherealcauseofthemysteriousfireearlierinthestory.KnowingthatitisimpossibleforhertobewithRochester,JanefleesThornfield.

Pennilessandhungry,Janeisforcedtosleepoutdoorsandbegforfood.Atlast,threesiblingswholiveinamanoralternativelycalledMarshEndandMoorHousetakeherin.TheirnamesareMary,Diana,andSt.John(pronounced"Sinjin";)Rivers,andJanequicklybeesfriendswiththem.St.Johnisaclergyman,andhefindsJaneajobteachingatacharityschoolinMorton.Hesurprisesheronedaybydeclaringthatheruncle,JohnEyre,hasdiedandleftheralargefortune:20,000pounds.WhenJaneaskshowhereceivedthisnews,heshocksherfurtherbydeclaringthatherunclewasalsohisuncle:JaneandtheRiversesarecousins.Janeimmediatelydecidestoshareherinheritanceequallywithherthreenewfoundrelatives.

St.JohndecidestotraveltoIndiaasamissionary,andheurgesJanetoacpanyhimashiswife.JaneagreestogotoIndiabutrefusestomarryhercousinbecauseshedoesnotlovehim.St.Johnpressureshertoreconsider,andshenearlygivesin.However,sherealizesthatshecannotabandonforeverthemanshetrulyloveswhenonenightshehearsRochester"svoicecallinghernameoverthemoors.JaneimmediatelyhurriesbacktoThornfieldandfindsthatithasbeenburnedtothegroundbyBerthaMason,wholostherlifeinthefire.Rochestersavedtheservantsbutlosthiseyesightandoneofhishands.JanetravelsontoRochester"snewresidence,Ferndean,whereheliveswithtwoservantsnamedJohnandMary.

AtFerndean,RochesterandJanerebuildtheirrelationshipandsoonmarry.Attheendofherstory,JanewritesthatshehasbeenmarriedfortenblissfulyearsandthatsheandRochesterenjoyperfectequalityintheirlifetogether.Shesaysthataftertwoyearsofblindness,Rochesterregainedsightinoneeyeandwasabletobeholdtheirfirstsonathisbirth.
