Objectives:

1)Tointroduceanddevelopbasiclisteningcomprehensionskillsforcollege-levelEnglish.

2)ToimproveunderstandingofEnglishinauthenticacademicandpracticalsituations.

3)Todevelopauralstrategiesfornote-taking,comprehension,andretention.

4)Todevelopcriticallisteningskillsandtheabilitytoempathizewithandevaluatedifferentperspectives.

Materialsneeded:

1)AudiofilesofauthenticEnglishspokenbynativespeakersfromarangeofaccents,includingAmerican,British,Australian,andpossiblyothervarietiesofEnglish.

2)Authenticlisteningmaterials,suchasshortlectures,podcasts,interviews,newsreports,andothermedia.

3)Handoutsandworksheetsforpracticeanddevelopmentoflisteningcomprehensionskills.

4)Avarietyofexercisesthatrequirestudentstolistenandrespondwithcomprehension,suchasquestion-and-answer,true/false,andnote-takingactivities.

5)Accesstoonlinelisteningresources,suchasTEDTalks,YouTubevideos,andotherdigitalmediaplatforms.

Lesson1:IntroductiontoListeningComprehension

Objective:TointroducethebasicskillsandstrategiesforEnglishlisteningcomprehension.

1.StartwithanicebreakeractivitythatencouragesstudentstosharetheirexperiencesandgoalsrelatedtoEnglishlistening.

2.Introducethebasiccomponentsoflisteningcomprehension,includingspeakingrate,pronunciation,structure,andvocabulary.

3.ProvideaudioexamplesofEnglishspokenbynativespeakersfromdifferentaccentsandregions.

4.Teachbasiclisteningskills,includingprediction,inference,andcomprehension.

5.Providematerialsforguidedpracticeoflisteningskills,includingshortaudioclipsandexercises.

6.Reinforcelisteningskillswithagroupdiscussion,askingstudentstosharetheirexperiencesandaskquestionsabouttheaudioexamples.

Lesson2:ListeningforAcademicPurposes

Objective:Todeveloplisteningskillsforacademicsettings,includingunderstandinglecturesandtakingnotes.

1.Introducethebasiccomponentsofacademiclistening,includinglecturestructure,note-takingtechniques,andcomprehensionstrategies.

2.Provideaudioexamplesofacademiclecturesfromvariousdisciplines,suchasscience,socialscience,andhumanities.

3.Teachnote-takingstrategiessuchasoutlining,summarizing,andparaphrasing.

4.Provideguidedpracticefornote-takingduringlectures.

5.Reinforcelisteningskillswithagroupdiscussion,askingstudentstosharetheirexperiencesandaskquestionsabouttheaudioexamples.

Lesson3:CriticalListeningSkills

Objective:Todevelopanunderstandingofcriticallisteningskills,includingtheabilitytoevaluatemultipleperspectivesandempathizewithdifferentviewpoints.

1.Introducethebasiccomponentsofcriticallistening,includingempathy,evaluatingmultipleperspectives,andidentifyingbiases.

2.Provideaudioexamplesofdebates,newsreports,andothermediathatrequirecriticallistening.

3.Teachcriticallisteningstrategiessuchasactivelistening,identifyingandanticipatingarguments,andevaluatingevidence.

4.Provideguidedpracticeforcriticallisteningduringdebatesandnewsreports.

5.Reinforcelisteningskillswithagroupdiscussion,askingstudentstosharetheirexperiencesandaskquestionsabouttheaudioexamples.

Lesson4:ListeninginPracticalSettings

Objective:Todeveloplisteningskillsforpracticalsettings,includingunderstandingconversations,instructions,andcustomerserviceinteractions.

1.Introducethebasiccomponentsofpracticallistening,includingcomprehension,memory,andcommunicationskills.

2.Provideaudioexamplesofpracticallisteningsituationssuchascustomerserviceinteractions,telephoneconversations,andinstructions.

3.Teachpracticallisteningstrategiessuchasactivelistening,clarification,andrepetition.

4.Provideguidedpracticeforpracticallistening,suchasrole-playscenariosandin-classconversations.

5.Reinforcelisteningskillswithagroupdiscussion,askingstudentstosharetheirexperiencesandaskquestionsabouttheaudioexamples.

Assessment:

Assessmentwillbebasedonthestudents'abilitytousetheskillsandstrategiestaughtinclasstounderstandandrespondtoauthenticEnglishspokenbynativespeakersinavarietyofsettings.Thismayincludewrittenassignments,oralpresentati
